Servando Gomez, known as "El Profe" (The Prof), earned about $4,150 during the first half of the year as a registered school teacher in a small town in Michoacan state, according to documents posted on the Mexican education ministry's website. Authorities have offered a $2.4 million reward for Gomez, said to be one of the leaders of the cult-like "La Familia" gang based in Michoacan, where President Felipe Calderon launched his army-led crackdown against drug gangs four years ago. Gomez's personal identification number on the ministry's website matched the identification on a list of suspected drug traffickers who have been sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department. Despite heavily armed patrols and thousands of arrests, rising violence in Michoacan and across Mexico has fueled fears that Calderon's strategy is failing to curb the cartels. Mexico's education ministry said it offered to help authorities look into the case, but state governments were responsible for the teachers in their schools, not the federal government. The federal attorney general's office, which prosecutes organized crime in Mexico, did not respond to requests for comment. Analysts have said Calderon has struggled to make inroads in Michoacan and disrupt the influence of drug gangs over local politicians, police and public officials. But his efforts suffered a major setback when judges released 30 mayors and public officials linked to drug traffickers, citing a lack of sufficient evidence. Gomez is suspected of running La Familia's propaganda campaign of public messages that cast the gang as Robin Hood-like rebels who are defending locals from the incursion of drug traffickers from other states. Mexico's education system, like other publicly run sectors like oil and electricity production, has been criticized for including people on their payrolls that do not work there.
