TOKYO (AFP) - – A power cut that hit production at a Toshiba memory chip factory in central Japan could cut the firm's shipments by as much as 20 percent early next year, the Japanese electronics giant said Thursday.

Toshiba was forced to suspend production lines of NAND flash memory chips at its Yokkaichi factory in Mie prefecture since early Wednesday due to a power failure, a company spokesman said.

Toshiba uses the factory solely to produce the chips, which are used in smart phones and other gadgets.

"Operations returned to 70 percent of normal levels by Thursday morning, but there is a possibility that shipments would be cut by as much as 20 percent in January and February," the spokesman said.

Toshiba said it expects production to be fully recovered by Friday, adding that estimated costs related to the suspension were not yet available.

Chubu Electric Power, which supplies power to the region, said electricity supply was disrupted by a malfunction at its Yokkaichi Thermal Electric Power Plant.
