The top level officials held a joint conference call with reporters discussing an earlier announcement that 15 communities across the country were selected to receive Recovery Act Grants to serve as pilot communities for eventual wide-scale use of health information technology through the Beacon Communities program. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Chief Economist to Vice President Biden Jared Bernstein and National Coordinator for Health Information Technology David Blumenthal, commented on Recovery Act Grants for Health IT Pilot Communities. The officials responded to an AHN question about Obama Administration’s study and collaboration with the European and other already working systems. The concerned authorities are working in a whole collaboration process with many countries said the participating official, adding, “Most of Europe is ahead of the US in universal healthcare system and even their electronic record system is very advanced.” According to the White House communique, the $220 million in Recovery Act awards will not only help achieve meaningful and measurable improvements in health care quality, safety and efficiency in the selected communities, but also help lay the groundwork for an emerging health IT industry that is expected to support tens of thousands of jobs.
