They added they also were pursuing leads on whether the suspect, Faisal Shahzad, had any ties to radical groups in the United States or overseas. Since he was dramatically pulled off a plane late Monday bound from New York to Dubai, Shahzad had "provided valuable intelligence and evidence" to investigators, said deputy FBI director John Pistole. Shahzad, said to be in his 30s, had admitted his involvement in the Saturday's botched car bombing in New York's busy Times Square, said Attorney General Eric Holder. He would now be charged with "an act of terrorism transcending national borders, attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, use of a destructive device during the commission of another crime, as well as assorted explosives charges," Holder added. "Based on what we know so far, it is clear that this was a terrorist plot aimed at murdering Americans in one of the busiest places in our country," he said. Shahzad, a US citizen originally from Pakistan, was arrested after the planned attack was foiled by a street vendor who noticed smoke coming from the car and alerted police who evacuated the city's packed theater district. NY car bomb suspect -- the one who almost got away Officials said it took just 53 hours and 20 minutes, from the time the dark green Nissan Pathfinder packed with a rudimentary homemade bomb was spotted parked on Broadway, to Shahzad's arrest on the Emirates plane. He had been closely tracked since being identified on Sunday night, Holder said, adding that the plane had begun to taxi up the runway late Monday at the John F. Kennedy airport for takeoff and had to be pulled back to the gate. "I was here all yesterday and through much of last night. And was aware of the tracking that was going on. I was never in any fear that we were in danger of losing him," Holder told reporters. Pistole told the press conference Shahzad had been placed on a "no-fly" list in the hours after he was identified as a suspect. Shahzad, who lives in Connecticut, had recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan and the city of Peshawar, a hotbed for Al-Qaeda and Taliban recruits, according to television reports. Luckily for police, the alleged bomber was apparently inept from start to finish as he tried to wreak bloodshed in the heart of New York's entertainment district. The bomb was comprised of a bizarre concoction of fireworks, clocks, gasoline, propane gas, and fertilizer. It failed to go off, only fizzling, and the fertilizer, say police, was not even the right kind to explode. New York police got their first break in the case, when a detective managed to find the Pathfinder's secret VIN number hidden underneath the car, which led them to the original owner who had sold the vehicle to Shahzad. Pistole said FBI experts at the headquarters in Quantico, Virginia, were now combing through the material taken from the car, as well as trying to determine the potential impact of the bomb had it gone off. "We of course are working with our law enforcement intelligence partners to uncover all possible ties this particular individual has or may have had to radical extremism or terrorist organizations, both at home and overseas." "By my calculation, from the time Faisal Shahzad drove into and across broadway and parked that vehicle, so when he was apprehended last evening at the JFK airport, it was 53 hours and 20 minutes," said New York police commissioner Ray Kelly.
