Washington, D.C., DC, United States (AHN) - The Food and Drug Administration is reviewing commonly-prescribed prostate drugs for their potential to increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
The FDA released a statement this week that the drugs, gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists, have been associated with a small increased risk of diabetes, heart attack, stroke and sudden death.
The agency said doctors should be aware of the risks before prescribing the drugs. Patients receiving the drugs should be monitored for the development of diabetes and heart disease.
But the FDA also said that patients taking the drugs should continue to do so unless told not to by their doctors.
The drugs are marketed under the brand names Eligard, Lupron, Synarel, Trelstar, Vantas, Viadur and Zoladex. There are also several generic varieties.
