Singapore Red Cross to expand programmes to groom more volunteers
Channel NewsAsia - 1 hour 2 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: Despite the gloomy economic outlook and an expected fall in donations, one charity group is expanding programmes to groom more volunteers for its humanitarian missions.
When Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar in May 2008, Singapore Red Cross raised nearly S$12 million to help the victims. So far, S$8 million has been used to help in several areas, including building an orphanage and a school for some 600 children.
The money also went into funding 80 per cent of construction costs for an entire village in worst—hit Irawaddy Delta.
The town, which uses solar power, comprises 125 houses, a school and a community centre which doubles up as a cyclone shelter.
Singapore Red Cross plans to build two more schools and a cyclone centre in Yangon.
With more of such projects planned for the near future, the charity’s new chairman is looking for more volunteers, especially among young ones, to take part in overseas humanitarian missions.
Tee Tua Ba, chairman, Singapore Red Cross, said: "We’re also looking into our schools’ uniform groups. We’re reviewing how we could develop that love and passion for humanitarian work.
"Apart from first aid, parade and drills, I think it’s important to inculcate that spirit and passion for humanitarian work. They may not join us, but they may join one of the volunteer groups."
Mr Tee said one of the plans is to expose them to the organisation’s humanitarian work through exhibitions and talks.
The organisation is also looking for more volunteer doctors and nurses to work with international partners in overseas humanitarian missions. Volunteers with strong networking skills are also needed to raise funds for the charity.
"I’m going to set up a new section to spot talent among the volunteers, to expose them, train them and groom future leaders," he said.
Singapore Red Cross has about 10,000 volunteers, but only about 3,000 of them are active.
