Successful musical—theatre production "Wild Wild Rose" in Singapore
Channel NewsAsia - 40 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: A Chinese movie, "Wild Wild Rose", about a seductive woman and a greenhorn musician shocked many viewers when it was released in 1960.
Fast forward to today, the same movie is making its way into the theatres again — this time, in the form of a musical.
Veteran theatre actress Perry Chiu, who plays the main character Deng Sijia, said: "Like the character, I dare to love and hate. If I love a man, I’ll try all means to be with him, no matter what. But I’m different from her in that she’s wilder and will even pick fights with other women."
The role of the saucy singer is an adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen. But the Chinese version is about a nightclub singer in 1960s Hong Kong who has an affair with her shy pianist lover, played by Singapore’s MediaCorp artiste Thomas Ong.
The television actor is making his first musical—theatre debut as Liang Hanhua.
"I wanted a challenge, so I took on this musical role. I got myself a voice instructor, flew to Hong Kong to learn the dance steps from the trainers and practised them in my hotel room in private. When I finally showed the producers what I could do, they were pretty amazed," Ong said.
"Wild Wild Rose" enjoyed sold—out success in Hong Kong in November last year and is now being performed in Singapore.
It is also one of the last productions to be staged at the Victoria Theatre, which is set for a multimillion—dollar revamp in 2010.
Tickets to "Wild Wild Rose" are priced from S$38 each and are available from SISTIC.
