RIM unveils rejigged BlackBerry models
TORONTO/VANCOUVER - Research in Motion <RIM.TO> is launching variations of two existing BlackBerry smartphones, the company said on Monday, and its co-chief executive hinted that much-anticipated announcements on a new operating system and browser are also on the way. But its stock fell as the news fell short of what many investors were hoping the company would announce to counter growing competition from rivals like Apple Inc <AAPL.O> and Motorola Inc <MOT.N>, especially in the consumer market.
Israel lifts ban on imports of Apple iPad
TEL AVIV iPad to Israel," the Communications Ministry said in a statement.
Pirates rewrite script for Apple's China iPad launch
SHENZHEN/SHANGHAI - Just three weeks after the global launch, bootleg versions of Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> hot-selling iPad tablet PCs have begun showing up on the shelves of online and real-world shops in piracy-prone China. Apple recently delayed the iPad's international launch after huge demand in the United States caught the maker of trendy iPhones and MacBooks off guard. But Chinese consumers looking for knock-offs of the company's latest must-have product need look no further than this teeming electronics mall in Shenzhen, the southern Chinese boomtown near the border with Hong Kong.
Microsoft, Google eye Arabic web growth potential
CAIRO - The further integration of Arabic language capabilities in internet and other technological architecture will grant millions access to the digital world, Microsoft <MSFT.O> and Google <GOOG.O> executives said. As devices and applications become more ubiquitous in less developed countries, their content will grow and an embryonic e-economy should flourish, they said.
Multiplatform app stores reach beyond smart phones
DENVER - Offering 150,000-plus apps that have been downloaded more than 2 billion times, Apple's App Store is far and away the leading source of mobile applications driving today's mobile entertainment market. But who is No. 2? A little-known startup called GetJar, founded in 2004 in Lithuania.
Japan firms to standardize mobile software: report
TOKYO - Four major Japanese electronics companies will standardize their core software platform for next-generation cellphones aimed at reducing costs and raising competitiveness, the Nikkei business daily reported on Sunday. The firms -- Sharp <6753.T>, Panasonic <6752.T>, Fujitsu <6702.T> and NEC <6701.T> -- will apply the software system, used to drive animations and music, in the next-generation cellphones developed by NTT DoCoMo <9437.T>, the newspaper said without citing any sources.
U.S. students suffering from Internet addiction: study
NEW YORK - Crackberry is no joke. American college students are hooked on cellphones, social media and the Internet and showing symptoms similar to drug and alcohol addictions, according to a new study.
Lenovo emerges as leading candidate for Palm: sources
HONG KONG - Lenovo <0992.HK>, the world's No.4 PC brand, has emerged as the leading candidate to buy struggling smartphone maker Palm <PALM.O>, after the U.S. firm was rebuffed by other potential Asian buyers, sources said. Shares of Hong Kong-listed Lenovo rose as much as 5.9 percent to a 23-month high on Friday, helped by expectations of strong growth in the sector and speculation that it could bid for the U.S. company once considered a pioneer in the smartphone space.
Privacy chiefs keep watch over Facebook
BRUSSELS - Over the past six years, social networking has been the Internet's stand-out phenomenon, linking up more than one billion people eager to exchange videos, pictures or last-minute birthday wishes. The sites, led by Facebook with more than 400 million users, rely in large part on people's willingness to share a wealth of personal information with an ever-expanding network of "friends," either ones they actually know and see from time to time, or those they have met virtually through the Internet.
Biggest study on cellphone health effects launched
LONDON differs from previous attempts to examine links between cellphone use and diseases such as cancer and neurological disorders in that it will follow users' behavior in real time.
