ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek transport workers walked off the job on Tuesday to protest against austerity measures and labor unions called a national strike for next week, piling pressure on the government as it struggles with a debt crisis.

			World
Striking workers halted Athens' buses, trams and metro for six hours and hundreds marched to parliament chanting "hands off our salaries." The public sector union ADEDY was due to stage another protest march in Athens at 1500 GMT.
Protests against spending cuts and tax hikes aimed at pulling Greece out of its crisis have so far been limited, but polls indicate that public anger is rising.
The outcry after Greece bowed to market pressure on Friday and asked to activate an EU/IMF aid package of up to 45 billion euros ($60 billion) has unnerved some investors, who fear reform efforts may take a hit if it grows into unrest on the lines of the riots that paralyzed Athens for weeks in December 2008.
Many Greeks fear the aid package will lead to further belt-tightening.
"The government's resorting to the IMF support mechanism signals a barbarous attack on workers' rights," the ADEDY union, which represents half a million workers, said. "We, the workers, will continue and escalate our struggle against the anti-popular measures of the government, the EU and the IMF."
The ADEDY and the umbrella private sector union GSEE, which together represent about 2.5 million people or half Greece's workforce, announced a joint strike for May 5 -- their third this year against the government's deficit-cutting plans. They say the government's policies hurt only the poor.
"WHATEVER IT TAKES"
The Socialist administration has already sparked strikes and demonstrations over the past month by cutting public sector pay and raising taxes, but has vowed to press on with its program.
"I am determined to do whatever it takes, when it is needed, to revive our country," Prime Minister George Papandreou told his parliamentary deputies on Tuesday.
"It's now or never -- but we will succeed."
A new opinion poll, the first since Greece asked to trigger the aid, indicated that 61 percent of Greeks oppose the government's decision to ask for EU/IMF aid.
Some 67.4 percent of the 1,400 people surveyed thought the current situation could lead to social unrest, against 30.4 percent who believed it was unlikely, according to the poll by Greek Public Opinion (GPO) for Mega TV. [nLDE63P2IV]
Only 31.9 percent thought the PASOK government should stay on, while 31 percent favored a national unity government between PASOK, New Democracy and a far right party. Another 27 percent liked neither option and 10 percent had no answer.
Nevertheless, 50.8 percent approved of Papandreou's performance as prime minister.
The premium investors demand to buy Greek government bonds rather than euro zone benchmark German Bunds hit 700 basis points on Tuesday after a German budgetary expert suggested aid to Greece could still be blocked. It was the highest level since Greece joined the single currency. [nLDE63Q1TK]
