ShareThis April 26, 2010 2:51 p.m. EST Topics: earnings, company information, economy, business and finance, United States Mitchell Jaworski - AHN News Reporter Peoria, IL, United States (AHN) - Caterpillar Inc. announced Monday it swung to a profit in the first quarter as lower manufacturing costs boosted results, despite revenue falling in the period. The heavy equipment maker said first quarter profit totaled $233 million or 36 cents a share, compared to a loss of $112 million or 19 cents a share in the same period a year earlier. Caterpillar said excluding a charge of $90 million for healthcare accounting, earnings were 50 cents a share. The result topped analyst estimates for a profit of 40 cents a share, according to FactSet Research. Caterpillar reported total revenue in the first quarter of $8.2 billion, an 11 percent drop from $9.2 billion last year. “We are very encouraged by our performance in the first quarter. We focused on cost management and deployment of the Caterpillar Production System—factory efficiency improved, margins improved and our Machinery business returned to profitability," said chairman and CEO Jim Owens. Looking ahead, Caterpillar bumped its earnings and revenue forecast based on strengthening trends in order and activity. The company now expects revenue of $38 to $42 billion, leading to full-year earnings of $2.50 to $3.25 a share. Analysts are generally looking for earnings of $2.62 a share. “Economic conditions are definitely improving, particularly in the world's developing economies. Industry activity and orders are significantly higher than last year and are at record levels in some areas,” added Owens.
