ADVERTISEMENT The three intervened when Christopher Wayne Hudson, a former Hells Angel biker, attempted to drag his girlfriend Kaera Douglas from a taxi on a busy street in the southern city of Melbourne during morning rush hour on June 18, 2007. Douglas survived the incident. Lawyer Brendan Keilar, 43, was shot and killed in the confrontation and tourist Paul de Waard, from Middelburg, Netherlands, was shot twice. A third bystander, Edith Aquina, was unharmed despite pursuing the gunman as he fled the crime scene. They were each named winners of the Bravery Medal, the third highest Australian bravery decoration after the Cross of Valour and Star of Courage. The citations said that de Waard and Keilar attempted to calm Hudson and negotiate Douglas' release before Hudson drew a concealed handgun and opened fire. Aquina's citation said she screamed at Hudson to stop and then pursued him as he fled. A judge last year sentenced Hudson, 31, to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to shooting Keilar, de Waard, then aged 25, and Douglas, 24. Both Douglas and de Waard have recovered from their wounds. Hudson must serve at least 35 years before he can be considered for parole. Aquina and de Waard declined media interviews over their awards, which will be presented later.
