The online retail giant pledged to modify the Kindle 2 so that authors, publishers or any holders to a novel's rights can choose whether to turn on the feature, which takes written text and converts it to human speech. CeBit aims to entice cash-strapped consumers FRANKFURT - Europe's biggest technology fair CeBit aims to entice cash-conscious business customers with software aimed at coping with the recession while itself continuing to experience a hemorrhage of trade-exhibitors. Launched in 1986 in the northern German city of Hanover, CeBit has lost ground both to the more gadget-oriented Berlin rival IFA - a summer fair that has increasingly drawn consumers -- and to its U.S. competitor CES, whose annual show has the advantage of being two months earlier. Depeche Mode debuts season-pass model on iTunes DENVER - iTunes has long been a double-edged sword for the music industry -- on one hand, it provided a model for selling digital music. On the other, the dominance of singles sales over album sales leaves a revenue gap that labels are still trying to close. So some relief is greeting Apple's introduction of the new iTunes Pass model with veteran band Depeche Mode, which records on the EMI label. Similar to the Season Pass model iTunes implemented in March 2006 for TV show downloads, the iTunes Pass lets artists sell a range of products for one flat price and deliver them throughout a given period of time. Intel, TSMC to unveil strategic tie-up on Monday SAN FRANCISCO - Intel <INTC.O> and TSMC <2330.TW> will make a "strategic announcement" on Monday, driving market and media speculation that the world's largest chip maker might begin to outsource crucial manufacturing. Intel said in an emailed statement on Friday that sales chief Sean Maloney and general manager of Ultra Mobility Anand Chandrashekar will announce details alongside TSMC CEO Rick Tsai in Santa Clara, California on March 2. Telekom Austria CEO to step down to head VimpelCom VIENNA - Telekom Austria's <TELA.VI> Chief Executive Boris Nemsic will step down at the end of March to take the top job at Russia's Vimpelcom <VIP.N>, Austrian weekly profil reported in its online edition on Sunday. Telekom Austria was unavailable for comment. Facebook lets users comment on new terms of service NEW YORK - Facebook is asking its members to help shape its governance policies after drawing their ire for a policy change that many perceived as being overbearing and potentially compromising privacy. From now on, the social networking site will be guided by a set of principles that reflect its dedication to transparency and openness in communication, Facebook said on Thursday. DoCoMo halts BlackBerry Bold sales due to overheating TOKYO - NTT DoCoMo Inc <9437.T>, Japan's biggest mobile phone operator, said on Friday it has halted sales of Research In Motion's <RIM.TO> BlackBerry Bold because the phone can overheat while the battery is being recharged. DoCoMo said it has sold about 4,000 high-end Bold phones, and about 30 users have complained the phone's keyboard area had heated up. The company said it has received no reports of users getting burned or of phones catching on fire. Yahoo paid $79 million to financial advisers NEW YORK - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> paid its financial advisers millions of dollars last year to defend the Internet company against Microsoft Corp's <MSFT.O> unsolicited buyout offer, according to a filing. Yahoo spent $79 million on outside advisers hired to advise it on Microsoft's offer to buy all or part of the company, the pursuit of "other strategic alternatives, including the Google agreement," the proxy fight and litigation costs, the company said. Newsday to charge for website, online cable service NEW YORK - Cablevision Systems Corp <CVC.N> plans to charge online readers of its Newsday newspaper, a move that would make it one of the first large U.S. papers to reverse a trend toward free Web readership. The paper said in a statement late on Thursday that it is in the process of transforming the site into a locally focused cable service. U.S. Internet firms defend tighter Web management WASHINGTON - Internet service providers like AT&T Inc <T.N> are making greater efforts to manage traffic on their networks as they seek ways to avoid congestion caused by bandwidth-hogging services like video, industry officials said on Thursday. Network management of Internet traffic has become a flash point between companies and public interest groups which worry that companies will become the arbiter of what is important or discriminate against certain applications or content.
