Los Angeles, CA, United States (CNS) - "American Idol," now in its ninth season, is losing the disarmingly brash, often hilariously honest Simon Cowell to another show, "The X Factor," his own superstar search which has created international stars like Leona Lewis. But while Hollywood continues to buzz about who could replace the British ego (names like Howard Stern, Elton John, and even Perez Hilton having been raised), Cowell himself offers some advice for the search for the next superstar judge.
"We have to put people on the show that know what they're talking about rather than guessing," Cowell said. "On a lot of these shows, judges have been replaced by personalities. Whoever replaces me, my advice has been, 'Find somebody who has actually experienced success in the music business.'"
He's only talking about his seat, of course, and not about new judge and personality Ellen DeGeneres, who he refutes claims that they aren't getting along and says she was a good choice. But for instances like narrowing down the contestants to a Top 24, which the show revealed this week, he says it's a difficult task which requires the experience. With surprising omissions like three-time Hollywood Week returnee Angela Martin, even Cowell sounds unsure about some of the decisions made this season.
"It all happened so quickly,"Cowell says. "I think in hindsight it would've been easier if we had five or 6 days to think about it to really review the performances but we had limited time and decisions were made relatively quickly. Then when you watch it back, you think, 'I could've made different decisions here.'"
But the fate of the contestants is now in America's hands, with the show heading into performance weeks which allow viewers to vote for the next "Idol." With the past few seasons seeing male-to-male showdowns like Allen vs. Lambert and Cook vs. Archuleta, Cowell says the girls may be the front-runners this time. "We've had a few years of guys winning the show. I would say there's definitely a better chance of a girl winning the show this year, certainly than last year," he says.
"You want somebody to represent what is going on at the moment," Cowell continues. "I'd love to find a Taylor Swift, somebody who's relevant rather than just a contest winner."
But whether or not he finds his Taylor Swift on his last season of "American Idol" this year, there's always next year when "The X Factor" is set to debut. But Cowell, who has spearheaded the hugely successful show since its 2002 debut, is focused on making his last season on "Idol" a great one.
"I want to go out on a high. It's my last season. I want it to be successful and I'll do everything I can to make it happen," he said. "The show will go on. I'm gonna be sad when it all ends."
