Taiwan's 2009 per capita GNP to drop below 18,000 US dollars: report
AFP - 36 minutes ago
TAIPEI (AFP) - - Taiwan's 2009 per capita gross national product (GNP) is forecast to decline year-on-year -- only the fourth drop since the 1970s -- due to the global economic slowdown, it was reported Sunday.
Taiwan's per capita GNP is predicted to fall from 18,020 US dollars of 2008 to 17,651 US dollars next year, the Taipei-based Commercial Times reported, citing tallies compiled by the island's top government budgeting body, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics.
Taiwan's gross domestic product fell 1.02 percent in the third quarter in the first such decline in five years due to weak spending and investment, the government said Thursday.
The figures compared with a previous estimated increase of 3.04 percent, in the first year-on-year contraction since the second quarter of 2003, according to government data.
To keep the economy from skidding into recession next year, the government has launched a string of initiatives aimed at boosting investment and spending, including an economic stimulus package worth 5.6 billion US dollars.
Taiwan's economy is forecast to grow 2.12 percent in 2009, according to the budgeting body.
