Bush hails Georgia's 'Rose Revolution'
AFP - Sunday, November 23
LIMA (AFP) - - Hours before talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, US President George W. Bush in a statement released Saturday hailed Georgia's 2003 "Rose Revolution" to cast off centuries of Moscow's influence.
"On this anniversary, Americans honor the brave Georgian citizens who defended freedom, and we renew our commitment to supporting Georgia's democracy, independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity," he said in a special message dated Friday but released a day later.
The movement that swept pro-Western Mikheil Saakashvili into power in Tbilisi drew celebrations in Washington and European capitals but drew an angry response from Moscow over such changes in its traditional sphere of influence.
The US president, due to have his first bilateral face-to-face meeting with Medvedev since Russia's war with Georgia in August, called the events of five years ago "one of the most inspiring chapters in the history of freedom."
"Thirsting for liberty and armed only with roses in hand, citizens throughout Georgia peacefully staked claim to their God-given right of liberty. These demonstrations proved once again, that when given a choice, people choose to live in freedom," said Bush.
"We also look forward to the day when the light of liberty shines on all people throughout the world," said the US president. "May the God who gave us liberty bless those who are advancing freedom's cause."
Bush and Medvedev last saw each other in person at the Group of 20 summit last week in Washington to shape the international response to the global economic meltdown.
