US-TECH Summary
Reuters - Friday, September 11
Motorola unveils Google phone to muted response
ADVERTISEMENT
SAN FRANCISCO - Motorola Inc <MOT.N> unveiled on Thursday the first of many cellphones to be developed in partnership with Google <GOOG.O>, but analysts questioned if it could revive the once-dominant handset maker's fortunes. Wall Street sees the phone as Motorola's last big hope to regain the market share it has lost to rivals like Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone, Nokia <NOK1V.HE> and Samsung.
Google plans new mirror for cheaper solar power
SAN FRANCISCO - Google <GOOG.O> is disappointed with the lack of breakthrough investment ideas in the green technology sector but the company is working to develop its own new mirror technology that could reduce the cost of building solar thermal plants by a quarter or more. "We've been looking at very unusual materials for the mirrors both for the reflective surface as well as the substrate that the mirror is mounted on," the company's green energy czar Bill Weihl told Reuters Global Climate and Alternative Energy Summit in San Francisco on Wednesday.
Steve Jobs strides back onto Apple stage
SAN FRANCISCO - Steve Jobs stepped back into the spotlight for the first time in nearly a year on Wednesday, drawing a standing ovation before unveiling new and cheaper iPods for Apple Inc <AAPL.O>. But Apple's shares closed 1 percent lower after hitting a year's high in the session. Analysts said they dipped because investors took profits after a steady run-up in the days before the event. One analyst also pointed to Jobs' appearance, saying the 54-year-old chief executive looked "frail."
Google to share scanned books with rivals
WASHINGTON - Google Inc <GOOG.O>, criticized for scanning books without copyright permission, has said it would open its digital library to rivals and bookstores, the search engine giant said on Thursday. Google made the announcement at a hearing of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee that had been called to discuss criticism of a 2008 settlement between the Authors Guild and Google on the grounds the deal to allow Google's massive scanning project created antitrust concerns, infringed copyrights and potentially posed privacy concerns.
Key U.S. lawmaker seeks changes to broadband rules
WASHINGTON - A key U.S. lawmaker on Thursday expressed concern that much of the eastern part of the United States could be disqualified from broadband grants because of the way remote communities are considered. Rick Boucher, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet, said at a hearing that some rules governing the $7.2 billion program of loans and grants are too restrictive and urged administrators to be flexible.
Polo's Rugby launches iPhone app for custom shirts
NEW YORK - Polo Ralph Lauren Corp <RL.N>, the fashion company behind the Polo and Club Monaco brands, said on Thursday its smaller Rugby brand was launching an iPhone application that lets users design their own shirts. Rugby is a collegiate-inspired brand that targets young adults and has a dozen stores in the United States.
Obama near choosing cyber security chief: source
WASHINGTON - A cyber security coordinator is expected to be announced by President Barack Obama in the next week or two, and the lead candidate is Frank Kramer, who was an assistant Defense secretary under President Bill Clinton, a source said on Wednesday. The source, who has direct knowledge of the matter, asked not to be named because of its sensitive nature.
Berlin's electronics fair pushes greener future
BERLIN - Red may be the official color of Berlin's IFA electronics fair but companies exhibiting there have chosen to show their green side as they prepare for new EU energy conservation legislation that will take effect in 2010. Starting in January, the European Union will require all new appliances to consume no more than 1 watt of electricity when on standby mode, and it will be cut to 0.5 watt in 2013.
Palm unveils Pixi phone, may be overshadowed by rivals
NEW YORK - Palm Inc <PALM.O> on Wednesday announced a lower-priced smartphone in the same family as its popular Palm Pre, although the move may be overshadowed by rival product launches by Motorola and Apple. Palm said it will start sales of the Pixi, a candy bar-shaped multimedia handset with a full keyboard, ahead of the holiday shopping season. Like Palm's popular Pre, Sprint Nextel Corp <S.N> will be the exclusive provider in the United States.
Nokia to skip operator tailoring for Linux phones
HELSINKI - Nokia Oyj <NOK1V.HE> plans to skip tailoring software of its upcoming top-of-the-range model N900 to different operators, raising the risk some carriers, who focus on integrating their own software, could refuse to offer the model. Nokia's plan for phones using its Linux Maemo operating system is the latest twist in a battle between handset vendors and operators for access to cell phone users.
