BISSAU (AFP) - – Soldiers on Thursday detained Guinea-Bissau's prime minister and a top general threatened to kill the government leader as the coup-prone African nation plunged into new chaos. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the government headquarters to demand the freedom of Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Junior. National radio broadcasts were interrupted by military music. Deputy Chief of Staff General Antonio Indjai said Gomes Junior, whose popular nickname is 'Cadogo', would be killed if the protests did not stop. "We ask you to stop anything that attracts a crowd in the streets. If you do not do this, we will have to kill Cadogo," the general told a press conference. Indjai was accompanied by Admiral Bubo Na Tchute, a former head of the navy, who had earlier left a UN building in Bissau where he had spent 94 days. The former Portuguese colony has plunged from coup to coup since independence in the 1970s, with the military always playing a key role in government affairs. A new crisis erupted in March 2009 when President Joao Bernardo Vieira was murdered by troops, apparently in revenge for the killing hours earlier of armed forces chief, General Tagme Na Waie. Elections were held in July last year and on Tuesday, the African Union had praised "encouraging developments" in the nation's efforts to return to constitutional order. The reasons for the new turmoil were unclear. A military source told AFP that the prime minister was being held at his home and that neighbouring streets are controlled by the soldiers who arrested him. According to the source, Gomes Junior was arrested at his office early Thursday, taken to the former army headquarters and then brought back to his office before being escorted to his home. But "some of our colleagues made an error which has complicated the situation," the soldier added. "We don't know what to do with him. There was also a reaction from some loyalist officers." Soldiers were visible around army barracks while the hundreds of hundreds of people gathered outside the government headquarters chanted: "Free Cadogo, we have had enough violence." Most of the demonstrators were supporters of the ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC). The unrest erupted as Guinea-Bissau's former navy chief Admiral Tchute "voluntarily" left a United Nations building in Bissau where he had sought refuge for 94 days, according to a UN press statement. Tchute returned to the country after spending over a year exiled in Gambia following a coup attempt he was accused of leading in 2008. "Bubo Na Tchute left the premises shortly before 11h30. Before he left, the Rear Admiral signed a document in which he stated that he was leaving the building of his own free will and peacefully," read the statement. The economy of the former Portuguese colony is dominated by cashew nut production, but it is also said to have large bauxite and phosphate reserves and oil is being searched for offshore.
