Apple investors get no satisfaction on Jobs
ADVERTISEMENT
CUPERTINO, California - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> Chief Executive Steve Jobs wasn't even there, but at times it seemed like it was all anyone talked about at the firm's annual shareholders' meeting on Wednesday. In a lively, one-hour gathering at the firm's headquarters in Cupertino, shareholders asked about the absent executive, serenaded the charismatic corporate chieftain, and spoke privately about the continued mystery surrounding his health.
Nokia considering entering laptop industry: CEO
HELSINKI - The world's top cellphone maker Nokia <NOK1V.HE> is eyeing entering the laptop business, its Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said in an interview to Finnish national broadcaster YLE on Wednesday. "We are looking very actively also at this opportunity," Kallasvuo said, when asked whether Nokia plans to make laptops.
Spray your tag on West Bank wall -- online
RAMALLAH, West Bank - It could turn out to be the world's longest graffiti space -- the massive concrete barrier separating Israel from the Palestinians. Over the Internet, a group of Palestinian graffiti artists is offering to spray-paint your personal message on Israel's towering security wall in the occupied West Bank.
Netflix to offer "streaming only" plans in future
LOS ANGELES - Netflix Inc <NFLX.O> Chief Financial Officer Barry McCarthy said on Wednesday it plans to offer its online streaming service on a stand-alone basis. "We're likely to do that in the foreseeable future," McCarthy said at the Jefferies 5th annual Internet and Media conference in New York.
"Hide-and-seek" death case irks Web users
BEIJING - Chinese Internet users, asked to probe the death of a man in custody who police say ran into a wall playing hide-and-seek blindfolded, repaid the local government's faith by hacking into its website and leaving bizarre messages. Authorities in the southwestern province of Yunnan invited Internet users last week to investigate the death of Li Qiaoming, 24, who died from a severe brain injury days after being sent to hospital from a detention center in Jinning county.
Too much PlayStation may cause painful lumps
LONDON - Gamers beware: Keeping too tight a grip on the console and furiously pushing the buttons can cause a newly identified skin disorder marked by painful lumps on the palms, Swiss scientists said on Tuesday. Called "PlayStation palmar hidradentitis" by the scientists, the skin disorder can cause painful lesions on the palms similar to patches found on the soles of children's feet after taking part in heavy physical activity, they said.
Google joins EU antitrust case against Microsoft
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> has added its voice to the case against Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> as the European Commission probes antitrust charges related to the software giant's Internet Explorer browser. "Google believes that the browser market is still largely uncompetitive, which holds back innovation for users," Sundar Pichai, Google vice president product manager, wrote in a blog post on Tuesday.
U.S. top court rules for AT&T unit in antitrust case
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Wednesday for an AT&T Inc <T.N> subsidiary in an antitrust lawsuit accusing it of anti-competitive practices over high-speed Internet access. The justices unanimously rejected a claim that AT&T's Pacific Bell Telephone subsidiary had engaged in a "price squeeze" aimed at driving out competition in the market for digital subscriber line, or DSL, service.
Global chip market to fall 24 percent in 2009: Gartner
HELSINKI - Global semiconductor revenue, hit by the economic downturn, is expected to fall 24 percent to $194.5 billion in 2009, according to research firm Gartner, in a marked worsening from its December outlook. In mid-December Gartner forecast a 16 percent fall in the 2009 chip market.
DirecTV, DISH ask U.S. lawmakers for rural incentives
WASHINGTON - The right incentives would make satellite television companies willing to extend local service to underserved and rural areas, senior executives of DISH Network Corp <DISH.O> and DirecTV Group Inc <DTV.O> told lawmakers on Tuesday. Congress is debating renewal of a law that gives the two national satellite television companies the right to carry and retransmit broadcast television programing.
