The jobless rate was 3.3 percent last month, down from 3.7 percent in August 2009, Statistics Korea said in a report. The rate was also down compared to 3.7 percent in July this year. The number of employed people was slightly more than 24 million last month, up 386,000 from a year earlier. The rise was attributed to more recruitment in the manufacturing, healthcare and construction sectors. "Jobs in the public sector decreased by 214,000 last month, but this was offset by close to 600,000 positions created by private businesses that required more workers to meet growing production and exports," said Eun Sun-Hyun, head of the office's social statistics division. Eun, quoted by Yonhap news agency, said August marked the fifth month in a row that the jobless rate was in the three percent range after falling from 4.1 percent in March to 3.8 percent in April. The government forecasts that Asia's fourth-largest economy will grow 5.8 percent this year compared to 0.2 percent in 2009. Wednesday's data suggests the economy is experiencing full-scale expansion despite greater external risks, said Tong Yang Securities economist Lee Chul-Hee. "The fruits of the economic recovery are spreading into the job market," Lee told Dow Jones Newswires. "Firms are increasing employment because they believe they'll continue to make more profits in the months to come."
