Nokia hits back with new phones amid turmoil at top
LONDON - Nokia unveiled an arsenal of smartphones crucial to its fightback against Apple's iPhone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry after its most fundamental management shake-up in decades. At its annual showcase conference -- attended by neither outgoing Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo nor incoming CEO Stephen Elop -- the world's biggest cellphone maker introduced three new models it is banking on to be a hit this Christmas.
Google sites to add social networking in "layers"
PARADISE VALLEY, Arizona - Google Inc <GOOG.O> plans to gradually introduce social-networking features starting this fall, reviving attempts to compete with Facebook after pulling the plug on its stillborn Wave project. Chief Executive Eric Schmidt told reporters on Tuesday the Internet search leader intends to work in "layers" of social networking to its sites, rather than unveil a flashy product. To propel that effort, he intends to sustain its pace of acquisitions.
IBM CEO blasts HP, defends "old-fashioned" image
NEW YORK - IBM Corp has been known to revel in its image as the most boring technology company. But Chief Executive Samuel Palmisano took that a step further when he used a rare public appearance to tell his Silicon Valley rivals they should consider being more boring themselves. Palmisano in particular took several swipes at computer maker Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N>, questioning everything from its acquisition strategy to its technology investment levels and its recent handling of the exit of former CEO Mark Hurd.
Intel launches Atom chips for smart TV and cars
SAN FRANCISCO - Intel Corp <INTC.O> unveiled microprocessors for smart TVs and Web-connected cars on Tuesday and expanded an online store selling applications for netbooks built with its Atom chips. Intel's low-cost Atom processors designed for mobile gadgets dominate the netbook niche but the leading chipmaker has struggled to get into smartphones -- and the fast-growing market for devices like tablets, car computers and Internet televisions is wide open.
India hopes for resolution of BlackBerry issue
NEW DELHI - India hopes its concerns about security issues related to BlackBerry services will be resolved, the telecoms minister said on Tuesday, giving the government access to electronic messages. Governments in other countries, mostly in the Middle East, also fear consumers might use Research In Motion's <RIM.TO> BlackBerry services to aid terrorism or peddle pornography.
Czechs stop Google's Street View data collection
PRAGUE - Czech data protection authorities have stopped Google Inc collecting new images to update Street View, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday, in the latest setback to the search group's mapping service. Google has sent a fleet of Street View cars around the globe to capture images used with maps to give a panoramic view of streets, but it faces challenges in 37 U.S. states and a number of other countries.
RIM needs a big quarter to win back investors
TORONTO - Research In Motion <RIM.TO> will need strong shipment numbers for its latest quarter and a robust outlook for the current three months to dispel the growing naysayer sentiment that has hammered its share price. RIM won't get much immediate help from its latest smartphone, the BlackBerry Torch, which went on sale in the United States on August 12, giving it only a few weeks to show up in global unit numbers.
LG Elec unveils new smartphone, eyes 10 million unit sale
SEOUL - LG Electronic Inc, the world's No. 3 mobile phone maker, aims to sell 10 million of its first smartphone, Optimus One, which will be distributed globally through some 120 carriers, as it seeks to turn around the loss-making mobile unit. The South Korean firm, which has no smartphones to yet reach the 1 million-unit sales mark, is betting that booming demand for Google's Android-powered smartphones will help put it firmly back on the recovery path.
Microsoft Halo aims to reignite video game market
NEW YORK/SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> is hoping to reverse the recent slump in video games and kickstart the holiday shopping season as it launches the latest version of its blockbuster Halo video game early on Tuesday. Halo: Reach, the fourth in the popular series that pits the player against murderous aliens in a variety of settings, will be available from midnight in stores across the United States.
Artificial "skin" materials can sense pressure
CHICAGO - New artificial "skin" fashioned out of flexible semiconductor materials can sense touch, making it possible to create robots with a grip delicate enough to hold an egg, yet strong enough to grasp the frying pan, U.S. researchers said on Sunday. Scientists have long struggled with a way to make robotic devices capable of adjusting the amount of force needed to hold and use different objects. The pressure-sensitive materials are designed to overcome that challenge.
