MARKET SNAPSHOTS * The rupee <PKR=> weakened against the dollar on Monday amid higher demand for dollars for import payments, but dealers said they expected the rupee to hold steady in coming days. The rupee closed at 84.05/10 to the dollar, compared with Friday's close of 83.95/84.00. [PKR/] * The Karachi Stock Exchange's benchmark 100-share index <.KSE> ended 0.37 percent, or 38.66 points, lower at 10,389.46. Volume was 67 million shares, compared with 96.88 million shares traded on Friday. [.KA] * The net inflow of foreign portfolio investment in the stock market was $4.96 million on Monday. [http://www.nccpl.com.pk/fipi-new/index.php] * U.S. stocks staged a broad rally that drove the S&P 500 to its best day in two months on Monday after manufacturing, consumer spending and construction data instilled confidence that the economic recovery is gaining traction. The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 143.22 points, or 1.30 percent, to 11,151.83. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 15.57 points, or 1.31 percent, to 1,202.26. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> added 37.55 points, or 1.53 percent, to 2,498.74. [.N] * Oil prices fell near $86 a barrel on Tuesday on dollar strength, after hitting a 19-month high above $87 on Monday on economic optimism and a possible short-term supply crunch related to a massive oil spill off the U.S. Gulf Coast. NYMEX crude for June delivery fell 19 cents to $86.00 a barrel by 0107 GMT. The contract rose 4 cents to settle at $86.19 a barrel on Monday. That was below the intraday high of $87.15, which just eclipsed the previous 2010 peak of $87.09 struck on April 6 and was the highest front-month crude price since $89.82 traded on Oct. 9, 2008. [O/R] * Gold was driven lower on Tuesday by a stronger U.S. dollar after hitting its highest price this year overnight, though scepticism over whether a resolution to Greece's debt crisis has been reached limited the decline. Spot gold <XAU=> was quoted at $1,181.45 an ounce versus Monday's notional close of $1,183.30. Intraday trading on Monday saw spot bullion climb to a 2010 high of $1,187.41 an ounce.
