(AHN) - Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA), who switched parties earlier this year and is seeking his sixth term, has statistically the same level of support among voters as his conservative rival, former Rep. Pat Toomey, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll. Specter is ahead of Toomey by only one point, leading 45 to 44 percent in overall support. Among Democrats, he has 79 percent, while Toomey has 82 percent support from Republicans. In a May 28 Quinnipiac survey, Specter led Toomey by nine points with 46 percent. An earlier May 4 poll had the senator on top by a whopping 20 points, or 55 to 33 percent, and voters saying 49 to 41 percent that he deserves re-election. Now, there are more voters who say Specter does not deserve to get another term, by a margin of 49 to 40 percent. Both candidates hold a big lead over their respective rivals for their party nomination. Specter has a 55 to 23 percent advantage over Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA), a a former three-star Navy Admiral who has a Ph.D. from Harvard University. Toomey has no worries with a 47 to 6 percent lead over Peg Luksik, a 1990 gubernatorial candidate and campaign manager for 2008 Republican congressional candidate Bill Russell. The contest between Specter and Toomey in terms of fundraising is also close. The Democrat reported raising $1.73 million in the second quarter, and has $7.5 million cash on hand. Toomey raised $1.64 million despite launching his campaign well into the race in mid-April, and has $1.1 million cash on hand. Sestak, who has been engaged in an acrimonious exchange with Specter in the past weeks about who is the "real Democrat," raised $1 million and has $4.2 million left over. According to the poll, the congressman would lose against Toomey if he won the Democratic nomination instead of Specter, but only by a 35 to 39 percent margin. The survey also says Toomey is ahead by a hairsbreadth among independents, 46 to 42 percent, and has 11 percent support from Democrats, the same level of Republican support Specter has. Toomey's ratings among non-Republicans contradict concerns among the GOP leadership that he is too conservative to win in a general election against Specter, who is the longest-serving senator in Pennsylvania history. Republicans had tried to woo former Homeland Security Sec. Tom Ridge, a moderate like Specter. But Ridge announced in May that he would not enter the race, saying, "My desire and intention is to help my party craft solutions that both sides of the aisle can embrace." Last week, the National Republican Senatorial Committee endorsed Toomey, but some observers called it a "belated" declaration of support. Specter left the GOP on April 28, two weeks after Toomey challenged him for the Senate and after months of conservative fire for supporting several Obama administration bills, including the $787 billion economic stimulus package and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. The senator had attributed his switch to having been criticized by the GOP despite his four decades of work for "ideals of a Republican Party whose tent is big enough to welcome diverse points of view." Democrats had gained a 59-vote Senate majority from the defection, only a vote away from a filibuster-proof majority which they now have. They had received Specter with the friendliest kind of welcome --- a joint press conference with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the White House, and the President's support in the 2010 primary. A graduate of Yale Law School, Specter was a Democrat in his early political life, working for the Warren Commission in its investigation of the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
