Mount Gibson managing director Luke Tonkin announced to the Australian Securities Exchange on Wednesday that the government's Foreign Investment Review Board had approved the rights issue and share placement to China's APAC Resources Ltd. and Shougang Concord International Enterprises Company Ltd. which will raise 162 million Australian dollars ($114 million). The news prompted a 40 percent surge on Wednesday in Mount Gibson's share price, which closed at AU$0.35. The shares rose 5.7 percent to AU$0.37 by late Thursday. The approvals suggest the government is willing to accept greater Chinese ownership of Australia's resource industry, which has been hit hard by the global economic slowdown. The two Chinese companies stand to gain a 40 percent stake in the Australian miner. Before the global downturn, Beijing had long complained to the Australian government about the escalating price of iron ore that Anglo-Australian mining giants BHP Billiton Ltd. and Rio Tinto Ltd. had been charging to feed the burgeoning Chinese manufacturing sector.
