Little Nyonya wants you to judge her!
Channel NewsAsia - Friday, December 19
Jeanette Aw plays the leading role in MediaCorp Channel 8's mega drama of the year, "Little Nyonya". Will this drama raise her above the rest of the six Caldecott Princesses, to join Zoe Tay and Fann Wong in their league? While the show continues to air currently, Jeanette shares on giving her best during the four months of grueling filming. An exhausted Jeanette decides to let the viewers be the judge of her performance.
"I have never thought about it (running in the league of Caldecott Queens); I tried my best, I did my best. I hope viewers can be the judge of my performance," she says.
Looking back, Fann also got her recognition from playing a role, at multiple stages of life, in "Chronicle of Life". The performance won her the "Best Actress" in 1995 Star Awards and secured her status as Queen. With Jeanette taking on multiple roles in this latest mega drama, all the hard work may just pay off to give the similar recognition.
"Actually, I'm really happy to be able to participate in this drama. As for my performance, I feel that I've put in my best. I always gave my best in every performance, but this drama is really taxing; mentally and physically. Even so, I have told myself time and again to persevere on. And though it may be tiring, I feel that it's worth it," Jeanette claims.
While "Huang Juxiang" and "Yamamoto Yueniang", both played by Jeanette, may have similar wardrobe, she has to pay extra attention in portraying the distinct differences in their character.
"After reading the script, I realized that Yueniang's character goes through a journey of maturation. Just this role itself has many levels of expression. Her change comes from experiences; this to me is quite a challenge. Juxiang on the other hand, is deaf and mute. She has rich emotions that run deep, and to portray that is not an easy task."
Many may be mistaken that a deaf and mute role to be easy to play because there are no lines to memorize. However, without lines, expressing the role becomes an even greater challenge.
"You'll still have to read the script to understand the interactions between characters. As she (Juxiang) is unable to express herself with the help of words, her expressions become vital in communication. The sign language choreographed plays a part too," shares Jeanette.
Sign Language - Jeanette Style!"Yup, I made them up and then consulted the director before shooting. The idea was to have simple and comprehensive gesturing. During that era, Juxiang do not have a chance to go to school. So as a simple girl, she creates her own sign language," Jeanette reveals.
Four months of shooting with only three days rest, some scenes even got Jeanette gritting her teeth.
"There was a scene whereby I had to fall into a well. It was really tough because I was supposed to be in the water from around 4p.m. to 1 or 2a.m., before Qi Yuwu came to my rescue. I was soaked in water for quite a long period of time for the shoot. It was rather cold and unbearable to be in the confined space with a lot of smoke. The "rescue" finally came, with us being pulled up by wires hooked up around our chest; it was really uncomfortable," Jeantte says.
Little Nyonya is currently airing on weeknights, 8-10p.m. on Mondays and 9-10p.m. on Tuesdays to Fridays.
