73% of students who sat for Normal (Academic) exam eligible for Sec 5
Channel NewsAsia - 58 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: 8,653 or some 73 per cent of students who sat for the Normal (Academic) Level Examination are eligible for Secondary 5 next year.
The top student was Chinese national Ao Chengkai of Yio Chu Kang Secondary School. Ao Chengkai moved to Singapore from Shanghai in 2006 knowing very little English.
But all that was behind the young man who mastered the language well enough to ace the ’N’ Level exams with an aggregate of six.
He said: "My teachers helped me and a lot of times my fellow students also encouraged me to try to speak English in front of them. With their help I sort of improved. I watched Channel NewsAsia and Channel 5 a lot."
Other top Chinese students were Ong Guo Xiang, Kwa Yan Hui, Xu Guifang, Melissa Lim Jie Yi, Yeung Wai Hing, Joyce Tham Zi Yun and Chua Ze Lin Melissa, all of whom scored an aggregate of seven.
Also achieving an aggregate of seven were two top Malay students, Safiah Yahya and Muhammad Ihsan Salimi.
Top Indian students, Pillay Aaron Ashley, Muhammad Aziz Firdaus and Sangareewari Silvam all had an aggregate of eight.
This is the second year that Normal (Academic) students, who did well enough in their ’N’ Levels can opt to take a direct route to Higher Nitec Courses at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).
This means they can skip the ’O’ Level exams and start their ITE courses a year earlier.
Out of the 11,820 students who sat for the Normal (Academic) Level Examination, 3,704 students also took one to two subjects in the ’O’ Level Examination. If they do well enough, they are eligible to proceed to Sec 5 Normal Academic.
This year also saw the first cohort of 6,028 students sitting for the new Singapore—Cambridge GCE Normal (Technical) Level Examination.
Bukit Panjang Government High School produced the top two students who sat for the new exam. Lim Shi Hui and Nurul Farhana Winarto Utomo both scored seven As.
NT subjects are geared towards practice—oriented learners to cater to students’ different learning profiles and help them discover their interests.
For Shi Hui and Nurul Farhana, the secret of their success was simply consistent hard work.
Nurul Farhana said: "I just do the revision since Sec 3. So when the exams are approaching, I don’t have to rush to study."
Shi Hui said: "I used so much time on all this practice, so I feel so happy that I get all these results."
All NT students who have completed their secondary education this year can apply to further their studies at the ITE. — CNA/vm
