Chinese police look for man suspected in 8 deaths
By TINI TRAN,Associated Press Writer AP - 1 hour 36 minutes ago
BEIJING - Police in central China have launched a manhunt after finding eight bodies, including those of a 2-year-old and his grandmother, who is believed to have rejected the prime suspect, state media reported Tuesday.
Authorities found the bodies of the boy, Zou Chuanshuo, and Zhu Deqing, 43, in their home in Luoyang in Hubei province on Monday morning. Their wounds suggested the killer had been armed with an ax, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
Neighbors told police that Zhu, a widow, was being pursued by a man named Xiong Zhenlin, who wanted to marry her. However, Zhu reportedly turned him down, Xinhua said.
Police are offering a 50,000 yuan ($7,100) reward for information leading to the arrest of Xiong, a 32-year-old junkyard owner, Xinhua said.
Police also discovered six other bodies _ three men and three women _ after searching Xiong's junkyard. The six, between the ages of 45 and 69, had all been employees at the salvage operation. Police found bloodstained axes and hammers on the premises.
On Tuesday, an officer at the local Suizhou police department confirmed the search was ongoing.
"We're using about 200 police, and we're doing our utmost to catch the killer," said the police officer, who refused to give his name because he had not been authorized to speak with media.
Autopsies were conducted Monday but results have not been released yet.
In a separate, unrelated case in southern China, police arrested a man suspected of killing a 4-year-old girl who lived in his neighborhood.
A statement released by Guangzhou police Tuesday said the suspect was arrested last Friday after police discovered the girl had been killed in a nearby rented apartment. It said the man confessed.
In the statement, the police denied widespread local reports about the grisly nature of the slaying. Media reports said the girl's body had been found dismembered inside a freezer.
