Bangladesh protests Indian oil survey
AP - 1 hour 18 minutes ago
DHAKA, Bangladesh - Bangladesh has asked India to withdraw survey ships apparently searching for oil in contested common waters of the Bay of Bengal, a foreign ministry official said Saturday.
The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry summoned Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakraborty on Saturday and lodged a formal protest against the alleged intrusion of three survey ships into an offshore area claimed by both neighbors.
Bangladesh asked India to stop any exploration activities and remove the ships from the area until the boundary dispute could be settled, Foreign Secretary Touhid Hossain said.
Both sides, meanwhile, offered to hold talks _ possibly in India next month _ to discuss the issue, he added.
Bangladesh dispatched a Naval patrol after the survey ships entered an area off its southwestern coast Thursday.
Chakraborty said the vessels, which were chartered by private Indian companies, were expected to leave after completing their work.
Last month, Bangladesh accused Myanmar of sending survey ships to prospect for oil and gas in another disputed deep-sea area. The standoff ended after a Bangladeshi diplomatic mission visited Myanmar, and the contracted South Korean company removed its survey equipment.
