BEIJING (Reuters) - China denied on Tuesday media reports that an artillery drill in the East China Sea was in response to a planned military exercise between South Korea and the United States.
World | China | South Korea
The 6-day, live ammunition exercise starting on Wednesday in the East China Sea off China's coast was seen by some analysts as a "response to a (planned) joint exercise between the United States and Republic of Korea navies in the Yellow Sea," said the China Daily, the country's official English-language newspaper.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Qin Gang, said there was no such link and a Chinese military officer said the timing was coincidental.
"This is a regular military exercise," the spokesman Qin told a regular news conference. "This is not related to the situation on the Korean Peninsula."
Li Daguang, a professor at China's National Defense University and a People's Liberation Army (PLA) officer, said the exercise was "not aimed at the U.S.-South Korea joint exercise."
"The PLA artillery exercise in the East China Sea and the joint U.S.-South Korea exercise in the Yellow Sea are a complete coincidence," Li told the Wen Wei Po, a Hong Kong newspaper under mainland control.
"The outside world shouldn't read anything into this."
The Yellow Sea lies to the north of the East China Sea and the areas of the two exercises would not overlap.
China's Foreign Ministry said last week it was concerned about reports a U.S. aircraft carrier may join the anti-submarine exercise with South Korea following a standoff with North Korea over the sinking of a warship from the South.
"Though the Chinese government did not say anything about the drill, anybody with common sense on military strategy will bet that they are related," one expert on China-U.S. relations, Shi Yinhong of Renmin University in Beijing, told the China Daily.
The joint exercise that had been expected this month will most likely take place in July, although a date has yet to be set, the Pentagon said on Monday.
Washington has not said officially whether an aircraft carrier would participate, as some news reports citing Pentagon sources have suggested.
Beijing has been angered by U.S. navy ships engaging in surveillance in waters close to China's southern coast.
Earlier this year, Beijing curtailed contacts with the Pentagon over continued U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, the self-ruled island that China claims as its own territory.
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said this month China's decision to break off military-to-military contacts could undercut regional stability.
Gates said the PLA was the main obstruction in the way of improved relations and suggested its position was at odds with that of the country's political leadership.

China does not seem to know that Obama is POTUS, or maybe they do know. I’m sure our great leader will apologize, and may he do it the oriental way.

The US is spying off of China’s coast, and we act surprised when they get upset?
How would you feel if Russia started joint military exercises with Cuba near Florida, or had Russian warships patrolling and doing surveillance off of Long Island.

I have been living in China for about 7 years now, and there is constent talk in China about how some Americans have the view of a “china threat.” Although there are some scholars and politicians in the US who view China as a threat, I have found after living in China and reading their newspapers and books that there is more of a “US threat” view in China than there is a “China threat” view in the US. Almost everyday in China you can read Anti-US news articles, many of them fake. The media is manipulated in China to make it seem like the US is threatening China, and and all this negative news manipulates the Chinese view of Americans. China’s media is the main reason the Chinese have a “US threat” view, but the same Chinese are quick to criticise those Americans who have a “China threat” view. The problem with the Chinese is that they think us foreigners can’t understand Chinese enough to read their newspapers and books and watch their news on TV. The world is getting smaller, the the Chinese can’t hide their secrets anymore. So, I would say to our Chinese brothers that they have to first drop their “US threat” mentality and then maybe Americans will drop their “China threat” mentality. After all, there are more Chinese who are manipulated by their media to believe the “US threat” than American who believe the “China threat.”

Nonaligned, you admitted yourself you haven’t lived in the US for 7 years now. You have no idea what the media is like over here. A quick scan of American papers shows an extremely xenophobic and propagandist slant towards anti-Chinese rhetoric. Don’t make ridiculous claims that there isn’t much anti-Chinese media in America, when there clearly has been constant demonization of China over the past 4 years.

@Thenonaligned –
You are absolutely correct. And the main cause of it all is the fact that China is a communist country with a government controlled news media (propaganda machine)

Are you serious? Yes, I haven’t been living in the US for 7 years, but I have been back to visit and I can read the western media on the internet. You must be Chinese, because only China would try to change the topic instead of talking about what I said. I was talking about chinese xenophobia and China’s Anti-US media. The US media reports both good and bad articles about China, and most of the bad articles are very accurate. China’s media just bashes and even lies about the US. I suggest you read more Chinese media and see for yourself. There is more of a “US threat” mentality in China than their is a “China threat” mentality in the US and that is just a plain fact. Have you read the Chinese news lately?
Most Chinese are hypocrits when they talk about western media’s so called “bashing” of China. It is nothing in comparison to China’s media bashing the US.
