All Blacks coach wary of Ireland after thrashing Scots
EDINBURGH (AFP) - – New Zealand coach Graham Henry said his 'grand slam' chasing side could expect a tougher encounter with Ireland after they thrashed Scotland 49-3 at Murrayfield.
The All Blacks were too strong for a Scotland side playing their first match since June, running in seven tries after the hosts had gone 3-0 up courtesy of a penalty from Australia-born outside half Dan Parks.
Ireland, by contrast, will be match-hardened this coming Saturday having already lost 23-21 to world champions South Africa and defeated Samoa 20-10 in Dublin this month.
"To come out and play the All Blacks, I'm sure Andy (Robinson, the Scotland coach) would agree, as your first game in five months must be a huge task. Ireland have played two Tests and will be ready to go," Henry said.
In a commanding display, which surpassed a 40-0 demolition Murrayfield job at the 2007 World Cup as New Zealand's biggest winning margin away to Scotland, centre Sonny Bill Williams stood out.
The former rugby league star, in only his second rugby union Test, provided superb passes out of the back of his hand to set up tries for wing Hosea Gear and full-back Mils Muliaina.
"He has got an amazing ability to offload in the tackle," Henry said.
"I don't think I've seen any rugby player with that sort of skill before, But he's still getting his feet under the table. I think he'll even go to a higher standard in future."
New Zealand captain Richie McCaw, who like Muliaina won his 92nd cap at Murrayfield to equal former All Black skipper Sean Fitzpatrick's national record of 92 Test appearances, was equally enthusiatic regarding Williams.
"As a loosey (loose forward) it's quite exciting to have a guy like that alongside you," McCaw said. "He doesn't often make a wrong decision."
Henry also paid tribute to the appearance feat of McCaw and Muliaina - who scored two tries against Scotland - by saying: "To equal Sean Fitzpatrick's record is a pretty special achievement by two guys in one match."
New Zealand came into this fixture on the back of a not wholly convincing 26-16 win over England at Twickenham, and Henry was pleased by the way his Tri-Nations champions, who lost to Australia in Hong Kong before arriving in Europe, upped their game against Scotland.
"The boys had patience and built the game," former Wales coach Henry said. "We went up a couple of levels in physicality tonight."
Scotland were unbeaten in four previous Tests under Robinson, after a draw with England, victory away to Ireland and a 2-0 Test series win in Argentina.
This time last year the former England boss guided Scotland to victory over Australia and Henry pleaded with the Scottish media to go easy on the side.
"Any team that goes to Argentina and wins two games, they beat Australia last year, they are playing some good footy. They will be disappointed but I hate to think they would try to change what they are doing.
"Don't give them a hiding, they are on the way up."
But Robinson himself said Scotland had "let the nation down" and conceded there was plenty of work required in the week leading up to the arrival of the Springboks, also chasing a 'grand slam' after a 29-25 win over Wales.
"It's a short turnaround. We've really let the nation down today and it's about how we come back from that.
"The whole 22 have to look at themselves and so do I. We have lost a game of rugby and to an outstanding team but the main thing for me now is what we do next week. They scored seven tries and I believe we should be able to stop seven tries at this level."
It now seems as if little can prevent New Zealand completing a third clean sweep of the 'Home Nations' in five years to set alongside their 'grand slams' of 2005 and 2008, especially as Ireland have never beaten them and Wales, whom they face in Cardiff on November 27, have to go back 57 years for their last win over the All Blacks.
But Henry remained concerned by the way New Zealand were conceding scrum penalties. "We are not on the same level as the referees. It's not their fault, it's ours."
