Coach Johnson hails England young guns after Wallaby rout
LONDON (AFP) - – England manager Martin Johnson warned that his young side must keep improving after they romped to their biggest ever victory over Australia.
Wearing an unfamiliar grey strip but deploying a technicolour gameplan, Johnson's side on Saturday delighted the Twickenham crowd with a scintillating attacking display to run out 35-18 winners.
Northampton winger Chris Ashton stole the show with two tries -- including one memorable 80-metre individual effort -- while fly-half Toby Flood produced a flawless kicking performance to end with 25 points.
The win was easily the most impressive of Johnson's two-year reign, and confirmed that after a prolonged slump following the 2003 World Cup triumph - though they defied the odds to reach the 2007 World Cup final - England are firmly on the road to recovery.
Johnson however was at pains to keep a lid on the euphoria after watching the Wallabies concede a record points total to England.
"That's what you work for -- days like this," Johnson said. "But we'll get back on Monday and start working hard again.
"The moment you start patting yourself on the back in rugby union you find yourself losing. Every time you go out there you have to deliver.
"If we played them again tomorrow does the same thing happen? Who knows. You've got to go out and perform every week. We can't live off this."
Nevertheless Johnson could not hide his satisfaction that he finally appears to have assembled a squad brimming with youthful energy -- Saturday's starting XV boasted an average age of just under 27.
Several members of the team -- including scrum-half Ben Youngs (21), Ashton (23), tighthead Dan Cole (23), lock Courtney Lawes (21) and flanker Tom Croft (25) -- also have their best years ahead of them.
"The great thing about having these young guys is they're playing well," Johnson said. "They're in the team because they're our best players.
"Dan Cole's our best tighthead prop. He's 23 and getting better and better, getting exposed to this level of rugby. Just like Courtney (Lawes). He's improving all the time."
Johnson could also reflect on an assured performance from Flood, who barely put a foot wrong as well as contributing 25 points with a 100 percent goalkicking display.
"He has matured a lot and now he runs the game superbly well from there," Johnson said.
England's win was the first time since 2003 the northern hemisphere giants had registered back-to-back victories against Australia, following on from their 21-20 triumph in Sydney in June.
England face Samoa - unlucky losers against Ireland on Saturday - at Twickenham next Saturday before playing world champions South Africa, who beat Wales narrowly, a week later.
Johnson said he would demand no let up in England's approach as they attempt to build towards the Six Nations and the 2011 World Cup.
"Our guys are getting better and better at understanding what Test rugby's about and what we're trying to do," Johnson said.
"The big picture stuff is one thing but it's the detail that's important. The layers of that build up, week on week, game on game.
"We've got a few bruised bodies and we'll have to be smart about how much we train. But we want to come out next week and perform with the same intensity we showed today and better accuracy."
Australia coach Robbie Deans meanwhile said the Wallabies had not been wrong-footed by England's attacking gameplan, which confounded expectations that Johnson's men would seek to base their play on setpiece dominance.
"No I wasn't surprised at all," Deans said. "We've witnessed their progress and we knew that they're a good team. They played well.
"Obviously we came second in the game and we came here to come first. We're disappointed about that. But they played very well.
"They picked up the tempo at every opportunity -- they took quick taps, showed initiative and played good rugby."
Australia captain Rocky Elsom meanwhile blamed a lack of "execution."
"Some of the execution wasn't as sharp as it has been, and England's execution was top notch. That was the difference," Elsom said.
