Social networks are telcos' new best friend
ADVERTISEMENT
BARCELONA - Everybody at this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona wanted to be the new best friend of the social networks. From the world's biggest phone maker, Nokia <NOK1V.HE>, to tiny Irish semiconductor start-up Movidia, delegates to the wireless industry's biggest annual gathering couldn't stop talking about Facebook, MySpace and Bebo.
Scientists make advances on "nano" electronics
CHICAGO - Two U.S. teams have developed new materials that may pave the way for ever smaller, faster and more powerful electronics as current semiconductor technology begins to reach the limits of miniaturization. One team has made tiny transistors -- the building block of computer processors -- a fraction of the size of those used on advanced silicon chips.
Look beyond jobs for U.S. broadband payoff: experts
WASHINGTON - The $7.2 billion slice of the $787 billion economic stimulus package set aside to spur investment in high-speed Internet may not live up to its full promise of job creation. Instead, the program's success is better calibrated by how it improves productivity and spreads more opportunity to people in rural areas often overlooked by big corporations, according to industry experts at a Thursday conference on the impact of the stimulus.
Vizio passes Sony in flat panel TVs
TAIPEI - LCD TV brand Vizio Inc overtook Sony <6758.T> during the fourth quarter to become the second-best selling flat panel TV brand in the United States after stepping up its marketing efforts, research firm iSuppli said. Vizio, whose TVs are made by Taiwan's Amtran Technology <2489.TW>, took 14.3 percent of all flat panel TV shipments in the October-December period as consumers' appetite for more expensive brands fell amid the global financial crisis.
Disney buys kids website Kerpoof
LOS ANGELES - The Walt Disney Company said Thursday it has paid an undisclosed amount for Kerpoof Studios, a creator of online tools that kids can use to make artwork, write stories and create short movies. Kerpoof's technology has been integrated into Disney.com, enabling users to create artwork around properties including Mickey Mouse and characters from the films "Cars" and "The Little Mermaid."
iPhone features everywhere in rivals' new phones
BARCELONA - Copying a few pages from the playbook of Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone strategy, which brings many of the powers of the Internet to mobile phones, is no way to beat the computer interloper at its game. But that's exactly what many of the world's biggest handsets makers are trying to do with new copycat phones and services that ape key features of the iPhone.
Mobile advertising edges closer to breakthrough
BARCELONA - After years of hype and hot air, advertising on mobile phones finally appears to be making some headway, boosted by the popularity of smartphones such as Apple's <AAPL.O> iPhone and the content found on them. Executives gathered at the mobile industry's annual event in Barcelona, Mobile World Congress, said the biggest boost to advertising was the introduction of smartphones, led by the iPhone, which had made surfing the Web an everyday occurrence.
Whereabouts of detained Egypt blogger unknown: Amnesty
CAIRO - Egyptian authorities have not disclosed the whereabouts of an Egyptian blogger and activist who campaigns against Egypt's Gaza policy and was reported to be detained earlier this month, Amnesty International said. Diaa Eddin Gad, 22, was detained on February 6 outside his home in the Nile Delta province of Gharbiya by security men who beat him as he screamed to his mother for help, Amnesty said in a statement seen by Reuters on Thursday,
Class action status denied in Microsoft Vista case
- A U.S. federal court denied class action status to a lawsuit accusing Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> of misleading buyers about which computers could run expanded features that were part of the Windows Vista operating system. But Judge Marsha Pechman of the U.S. District Court in Seattle allowed the suit to go forward on behalf of individual plaintiffs, according to court documents issued on Wednesday.
Few report hitches as digital TV switch begins
LOS ANGELES - The digital transition has begun in earnest, and early reports suggest a relatively modest level of disruption for television viewers. The National Association of Broadcasters said stations are averaging 50 to 200 calls from viewers with questions about the switchover from analog transmission, while the Federal Communications Commission has received 28,000 phone calls from viewers.
