(AHN) - Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO), the GOP's former no. 2 in the House, ended speculation on Thursday and announced his bid for the seat of Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO), who is retiring when his term ends next year. "The Senate is where the real battles will be fought for America's future. It is where every voice must be heard," Blunt said in a statement. "One-party control in Washington has created a dramatically new setting. Common sense and open debate are in danger of being suppressed by the overreaching liberal monopoly in Congress and the White House." Republicans had suffered huge losses in last November's elections, and it is the first time in 15 years that Democrats have control of both the Congress and the White House. The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) was quick to welcome Blunt, saying he would give Democrats a tough challenge in the 2010 mid term elections. "Roy Blunt is the true definition of a public servant. His tireless support for middle-class families, small business owners and Second Amendment rights have earned Roy the respect of people all across the Show-Me state, "Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), chair of the NRSC, said in a statement. "Roy's demonstrated ability to repeatedly win elections, combined with his proven fundraising ability and strong name identification, make him a formidable candidate heading into next year's election. Republicans are gearing up for a competitive election next year, but we are confident that this seat will remain in the Republican column," Cornyn added. A former Secretary of State, Blunt had resigned as House Republican Whip in November. He told the GOP in a letter, "In January 2007, I wrote myself a letter and mailed it to my office. The letter, unopened, sat on my desk until Wednesday... I wrote that it was my intention to spend the next two years holding the Democrats accountable and defining the differences between our parties. I also wrote that, were we not successful in recapturing the majority in 2008, it was my intention to serve only two years as Minority Whip." Blunt, 53, is a six-term congressman who became minority whip in 2002. During the launch of his campaign, he touted his long record of public service and experience in the private sector. "The real world experience I offer includes public service and the private sector, where most people earn their living and support their families. I grew up in a typical hard-working Missouri family, where my parents worked hard to make ends meet. My first job after college was teaching high school history. The people later elected me as the local election official in Greene County," the congressman said. Blunt is the second official candidate for the open Senate seat. Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, a Democrat, announced earlier this month that she would run. Bond is one of four Republican senators retiring next year. He announced his decision not seek re-election after 40 years in public service during a speech before the Missouri General Assembly on Jan. 8.
