ShareThis January 17, 2010 4:21 p.m. EST Topics: United States, Politics, Social Issues Tejinder Singh - AHN Correspondent Washingtn, D.C., D.C, United States (AHN) - President Barack Obama along with the first family today attended church services at the Vermont Avenue Baptist Church in Washington D.C. with the service focused on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose photo was on the cover of the church program. The church's website says that the church was founded in 1866 by seven freed slaves. It was originally called the Fifth Baptist Church of Washington, DC.? In the church, Obama nodded his head and tapped his feet as the choir sang several songs, including "We'll Understand It Better By and By" and "How Great is Our God." The congregation took part in reading a passage from the Book of Psalms, 9:1-11. It reads in part, "I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart. I will tell of all your wonderful deeds." ?? The church's pastor Rev. Cornelius Wheeler stepped to the podium and said jokingly, "I'm nervous as a wreck," as he glanced back at the president.?? In introducing Obama, the pastor talked about the church being a family church, and of how proud the church is of the president. "We've never been more proud than we were a little more than a year ago when you were elected President."?? He went on to talk about Obama bashers, saying, "I don't know about the political correctness of this next statement, but it took eight years for them to mess everything up, I don't know why they don't have a little more patience while you fix it."?? And finally, he launched into the introduction. "I'm peacock proud and tickled pink to present to you your President of these United States, President Obama."? President Obama in his address said that King came to the Vermont Avenue Baptist Church in 1956 to speak right after the Montgomery bus boycott.?? Obama talked about the election, saying that even though "the good people of this country elected an African-African president of the United States," America has not entered into a post-racial age.? Obama talked about King understanding that without broad support the Civil Rights Movement would not be successful. "He remained strategically focused on his goal, his eyes were always on the prize," he said.? The president touched on politics with a little talk about health care, education, immigration, and employment. ? "Even after one of the country's worse recessions, life in America isn't even close to being as bad as it was (for African-Americans) during King's time," Obama said.?? The president said that government is working hard to lower the unemployment rate and improve schools. "But parents still need to parent. Folks can't look to government for everything," Obama said. He said that he was not only talking to blacks, but to all people.?? Obama talked about the virtues of hard work and patience. "We forgot what made the Civil Rights Movement a success...our generation is called to buckle down and get back to basics."?? "People ask, 'Why are you so calm?' I have a confession to make. Sometimes I'm not so calm. Reggie Love knows this. Michelle knows this," Obama said, adding that he sometimes gets impatient with the slow nature of progress. "It's faith that keeps me going," he said. Today: Michelle's Birthday Moreover, today is a special day for the first family as it is the 46th birthday of first lady Michelle Obama. Obama last night took his wife out for a surprise birthday dinner at Restaurant Nora on Florida and R streets NW, just west of Dupont Circle. Others in the company last night were, Marian Robinson, the first lady's mother; Valerie Jarrett, special adviser to the president; Eric and Cheryl Whitaker, friends of the Obamas from Chicago; Eric Holder, attorney general and Sharon Malone, Holder's wife; Mary Nesbitt, another friend from Chicago; Susan Sher, the first lady's chief of staff; Elizabeth Alexander, who recited a poem at Obama's inauguration; Cindy Moelis, head of the White House Fellows program; Anita Blanchard; and Jocelyn Frye, director of Policy and Projects in the first lady's office.
