Entertainment  |  Television  |  Media In a stunning upset, the newcomer in its first season beat out perennial favorite "30 Rock," the NBC comedy starring, written and produced by Tina Fey, and other established award-winning shows such as "The Office" and "Entourage." "Glee" also edged out new ABC comedy "Modern Family". "This is for anybody and everybody who ever got a wedgie in high school," said creator Ryan Murphy, the brains behind the show, flanked by his cast. The quirky program -- one of the best reviewed new shows of the current TV season with a regular audience of 8.7 million viewers -- struck a chord with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gives out the Golden Globe Awards. The series snagged a leading four nominations. The Golden Globes are awarded annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and while they are closely-watched for their film honors during Oscar season, they are often the first to shine a spotlight on new TV shows and emerging stars. In the other major TV award, cable network AMC's "Mad Men" -- which shines a lens on men and women working in a Madison Avenue advertising agency -- won the Golden Globe for best television drama, for the third straight year. "I can't believe we have gotten to do this three times," said star Jon Hamm. "We all really responded to the pilot and the idea of this showing and finding a home on AMC was a big question for us. MARGULIES, HALL TOP ACTORS Former "ER" star Julianna Margulies won best actress in a TV drama in "The Good Wife" (CBS), playing the spouse of a disgraced public official. Cable network Showtime's "Dexter", a profile of a serial killer, won two acting awards: best actor in a drama for lead Michael C. Hall, and best supporting actor for film and Broadway veteran John Lithgow. "This was the year that Dexter kind of got its due," Lithgow told reporters backstage. "It takes people a while to realize -- wait a minute, this is a great drama." Hall turned up with a black skullcap, which he indicated was a sign of his ongoing battle with lymphoma. "I have to be completely frank with you, I had every intention of keeping it quiet," Hall said about the disease. Alec Baldwin won the Golden Globe for best actor in a TV comedy playing a network executive in "30 Rock," and Toni Collette was best comedic actress for "United States of Tara." HBO's controversial polygamy drama "Big Love" was honored with a best supporting actress award for Chloe Sevigny, and "Grey Gardens" with Drew Barrymore took best made for TV movie, and Barrymore was best actress in a TV movie. But the network's vampire show "True Blood" went home empty-handed. Finally, Kevin Bacon was named best actor in TV movie in war drama "Taking Chance."
