Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) - President Barack Obama on Saturday morning announced that former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush would team up to work on relief efforts in Haiti. He thanked both of them for agreeing to help.
At a televised press conference, Obama was flanked by Clinton and Bush, both of whom spoke after Obama made his comments. Obama announced the creation of the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and asked people to donate through its Website at clintonbushhaitifund.org. He emphasized the fact that it was a safe place for people to donate money and know it would go to help the victims.
Obama said he was pleased that Bush and Clinton had agreed to lead an effort to raise resources for the people of Haiti and both men thanked Obama for the opportunity to serve.
"Every day that goes by, we learn more about the scope of this disaster," Obama said. "We also know that our longer term efforts will not be measured in days and weeks, it will be measured in months and year." Obama mentioned some of the countries that are also helping in Haiti and the fact the disaster "must be a time of compassion"
Bush and Clinton will be asking everyone to help, Obama said. He also expressed confidence that efforts to help earthquake survivors in Haiti will succeed. "The two leaders with me today will make sure this happens, Obama said.
Bush asked the American people to donate money rather than goods and said they would make sure the victims in Haiti got what they needed.
Clinton emphasized that the money would be well spent and that the intention was to stay with the effort to help Haiti over the long run. He mentioned the fact that this would be the largest relief effort in U.S. history.
And Clinton expressed confidence in the people of Haiti, saying he still believed that Haiti could escape its history of poverty, despite the earthquake, but that it would take time and outside help.
