"Avatar," "Hangover" take home top Golden Globes
BEVERLY HILLS, California - A pair of box office sensations, "Avatar" and "The Hangover," earned top film honors at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday in a ceremony that took on a somber tone after the recent earthquake in Haiti. Action adventure "Avatar," whose 3-D effects have wowed critics and fans and helped it earn $1.6 billion at global box offices, claimed best film drama and top director for "Titanic" filmmaker James Cameron.
"Glee" sings top TV show tune at Golden Globes
BEVERLY HILLS, California - Critics' darling "Glee" beat out a strong line-up of old stalwarts and edgy new fare to clinch the Golden Globe for best television comedy or musical on Sunday, cementing the popularity of the Fox show about high school oddballs and misfits. In a stunning upset, the newcomer in its first season beat out perennial favorite "30 Rock," the NBC comedy starring, written and produced by Tina Fey, and other established award-winning shows such as "The Office" and "Entourage."
Conan O'Brien finalizing exit from NBC
LOS ANGELES - Conan O'Brien's "Tonight Show" dream is over. NBC brass certainly are praying that the same can be said for the PR nightmare that the late-night debacle has caused the network. On Sunday, attorneys from both sides were putting the final touches on a financial settlement that ends O'Brien's seven-month stint as "Tonight" host. The payoff to O'Brien is said to be close to $40 million.
Ricky Gervais falls flat at Golden Globes
LOS ANGELES - Perhaps it's finally time the Golden Globes stops cultivating a reputation as a wild and woolly affair. Its 67th annual edition on Sunday was leaden even by Oscar standards, weighed down by surprisingly uninspired hosting from Ricky Gervais. Yes, there were mitigating factors to take into account, from how the ongoing crisis in Haiti dampened spirits in attendance to the dampened umbrellas on the red carpet outside. But the Globes has done little in recent memory to merit its marketing stance as a loosened-tie kind of evening. While occasional glimpses of embracing celebrities and bursts of ambient sound from clinking Moet-filled champagne flutes are meant to convey breezy charm, the on-stage proceedings were mostly stiff.
Golden Globe fashion fights gloom of Haiti, rain
BEVERLY HILLS, California - Hollywood's top actresses strode down the Golden Globe Awards' red carpet in vibrant gowns on Sunday as stars sought to boost spirits after the deadly tragedy in Haiti and brighten a gloomy rainy day. Many stars, like Nicole Kidman, pinned ribbons of yellow, blue and red to dresses and tuxedos in a show of support for victims of the massive earthquake that rocked the Caribbean nation last week.
Simon Cowell recruiting "X Factor" judges
LOS ANGELES - Simon Cowell is talking to familiar faces to sit beside him at the judges table on Fox's "The X Factor." Cowell is in discussions with his former "American Idol" co-star Paula Abdul and his current "X Factor" U.K. co-star Cheryl Cole for judging positions on the show, which launches on Fox in fall 2011.
"Avatar" hits $1.6 billion worldwide
LOS ANGELES - In an unprecedented display of strength, "Avatar" led the worldwide box office for a fifth consecutive weekend, fast catching up on all-time champ "Titanic," distributor 20th Century Fox said on Sunday. James Cameron's sci-fi spectacular has now earned $1.6 billion, just $237 million short of the $1.8 billion record set by the filmmaker's "Titanic" in 1998.
"Hurt Locker" a blast at Critics Choice Awards
LOS ANGELES - "The Hurt Locker," a low-budget movie about an American bomb-disposal unit in Iraq, was named best picture on Friday at the Critics' Choice Awards, an event that has an uncanny knack of foreshadowing Oscar success. The movie's director, Kathryn Bigelow, also was honored, beating a high-profile field that included her ex-husband, "Avatar" filmmaker James Cameron -- a duel she described as "sorta surreal."
Hollywood stars lead Haitian quake charity drive
MIAMI - Haiti's devastating earthquake has moved Hollywood and pop music stars to lead a rally for disaster relief donations and open their own wallets, led by Haitian hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were the first to reach out to Haiti by donating $1 million from their foundation to Doctors Without Borders, which has been tending to victims of the quake that demolished buildings in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, on Tuesday. Tens of thousands are feared dead.
2010 could be busy year for digital music mergers
DENVER - Think last year's acquisitions of iLike, imeem and Lala marked the end of consolidation for digital music services? Think again. Gradually thawing credit markets and an increasingly competitive digital music landscape could make 2010 a banner year for mergers and acquisitions.
