SEATTLE - The chief executives of Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> and Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> met last week to discuss potential partnerships between the companies' Internet search and advertising operations, the technology blog All Things Digital reported on Friday. Wide-ranging talks have taken place between executives at the companies, the blog reported, including discussion of the potential for Microsoft to handle Yahoo's search advertising business, and for Yahoo to combine and run the two companies' display advertising business.
Steve Jobs maintains grip at Apple: report
WASHINGTON - More than three months into a medical leave from Apple, Chief Executive Steve Jobs remains closely involved in key aspects of running the company, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter. Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook runs the day-to-day operations, but Jobs has continued to work on the company's most important strategies and products from home, the newspaper said in a story on its website.
EBay buys Korean rival's stake for $413 million: report
SEOUL - EBay Inc <EBAY.O> has agreed to buy a controlling stake in South Korean online retailer Gmarket Inc <GMKT.O> for $413 million, at a 32.5 percent premium, news service eDaily reported on Monday. The long-discussed deal would help U.S. online auctioneer eBay emerge as a dominant player in South Korea's customer-to-customer online market by taking control of its key competitor.
"Rock Band" practicing "Chinese Democracy"
NEW YORK - Axl Rose may have spent 15 years fine-tuning the 14 tracks on "Chinese Democracy," but it took only five months for the album to make its way into the "Rock Band" video-game franchise. "Chinese Democracy" will be released in its entirety on the Rock Band Music Store on April 14, and gamers will be able to download and play all 13 songs from the record, Harmonix and MTV Games announced Friday. "Shackler's Revenge," the first track to emerge from the album, made its debut in the "Rock Band 2" release.
Skype founders said to be eyeing eBay company: report
SAN FRANCISCO - The founders of Web telephone service Skype, currently owned by eBay Inc <EBAY.O>, are interested in bidding for the company they sold some four years ago, according to a media report. Co-founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis have contacted several private equity firms in order to make a bid for the company, the New York Times reported on its website on Saturday.
French Internet piracy law defeated in parliament
PARIS - France's parliament rejected a bill on Thursday that proposed disconnecting Internet users if they download music or films illegally, with the ruling UMP party failing to turn out in force to approve the law. Backed by President Nicolas Sarkozy's government, the legislation was meant to quell the flow of free songs and films on the Internet that has hurt the revenues of artists and production companies.
Nintendo Wii in doldrums in Japan, plans fight-back
TOKYO is not vigorous at the moment in Japan," Iwata told reporters at a lunch meeting. "In fact, it is in the most unhealthy situation since its launch in Japan."
ESPN to launch Chicago sports site
CHICAGO - ESPN will launch a website dedicated to the Chicago market on Monday in an effort to reach more fans and generate more revenue from local advertisers, after more than ten years on the radio in the Windy City. "This is our first entrance into the local market place," Marc Horine, ESPN's vice president of digital media, said on Thursday.
Yahoo's plan: create community from isolated sites
SAN FRANCISCO - Like nearly 200 million other people around the world, Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> co-founder David Filo has a Facebook account. But if Filo and new CEO Carol Bartz have their way, the kinds of social networking features available on Facebook will become part of many Yahoo websites and allow their users to network with each other without using Facebook. The company hopes the strategy will help link its disparate properties, bringing more advertising dollars and growth.
"Sims" creator Will Wright leaving Electronic Arts
SAN FRANCISCO - Famed game designer Will Wright is leaving publisher Electronic Arts <ERTS.O> to focus on his own multimedia entertainment firm, the company said on Wednesday. Wright is the man behind the wildly popular "Sims" franchise of simulated reality games, as well as the more recent "Spore." "The Sims" and its spin-offs, expansion packs and extensions have sold more than 100 million units worldwide.
