The Taiwan dollar <TWD=TP> stood at T$33.754 to the U.S. dollar after an hour of trade, compared with the previous close of T$33.795. Trading volume on the main Taipei Forex Inc exchange was a thin $48 million after an hour of trade. Many major world markets were closed on Friday, and Hong Kong markets remained closed on Monday. "The big factor today is stocks, which will keep rising until the first anniversary of Ma Ying-jeou's inauguration," said a dealer in Taipei. Ma, who pledged to revitalise Taiwan's economy by cultivating ties with political rival China, took office on May 20, 2008. "Taiwan people look at him favourably, so they're coming back to invest in the markets," the dealer said. Taiwan stocks <.TWII> were up 1.01 percent in early trade. If China announces upbeat Q1 GDP growth news this month, that would also push up the Taiwan dollar as the island's economy becomes more interwoven with China's, the dealer said. Trade was expected between T$33.75 and T$33.82 on Monday, another dealer in Taipei said. Six-month NDFs were quoted at -0.460/-0.400, compared with -0.440/-0.390 the previous session, indicating investors expect the Taiwan dollar to strengthen by a higher degree in half a year. But the currency could dip as low as T$34 later in the week if the central bank intervenes again, dealers said. The central bank, which keeps the Taiwan dollar in a managed float, has been buying U.S. dollars in the market actively over the past few months to ensure the local currency trends lower to help the island's exporters that are reeling from a global downturn. On the smaller Cosmos exchange <COSMOS1>, the Taiwan dollar was trading at T$33.730 to the U.S. dollar from the previous close of T$33.785.
