World Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said a police investigation had left no doubt Israeli intelligence services had been behind the forgery of four Australian passports used by suspects in the killing of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel room. "These investigations and advice have left the government in no doubt that Israel was responsible for the abuse and counterfeiting of these passports," Smith told Australia's parliament. "These are not the actions of a friend." The Australian government ordered an inquiry into the fake passports by police and intelligence services, who visited Israel and found the four citizens involved had been innocent of any involvement. "No government can tolerate the abuse of its passports, especially by a foreign government," Smith said. "This is not what we expect from a nation with whom we have had such a close, friendly and supportive relationship." The government, he said, had asked that a member of Israel's Australian embassy in Canberra be withdrawn within a week. Australia and Israel are traditionally close allies and Smith said he expected relations to cool somewhat. Dubai authorities have given names of alleged members of the team that tracked and killed the Palestinian, and said they used fraudulent British, Irish, French, German and Australian passports to enter and leave Dubai. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in February there was no evidence to link his country to the killing, which also prompted Britain to expel an Israeli in March. But Britain's then-government said an investigation by the country's Serious Organised Crime Agency had found 12 forged British passports were used in the hit, copied from genuine passports. Four Australians -- Nicole McCabe, Joshua Bruce, Adam Korman and Joshua Krycer -- had their identities stolen and used in fake passports held by suspects believed to be involved in the assassination, Smith said. Mabhouh, born in the Gaza Strip, had lived in Syria since 1989 and Israeli and Palestinian sources have said he played a key role in smuggling Iranian-funded arms to militants in Gaza. Smith said the passport cloning operation used in his killing was of high quality and had obviously been state-backed. "The decision was made much more in sorrow than in anger," he said. "The decision was made in our national security interests, made in support of the integrity of our passport system, made in efforts to protect Australians who travel overseas." Authorities in Dubai had already been briefed on Australia's findings, he said, along with the other countries involved and close Australian and Israeli ally the United States. They deserve the Medal of Honor. Up the Isrealies. gus9 Report As Abusive     May 23, 2010 10:59pm EDT let’s hear it for gus9, commenting above..it shows that there are people who think Israel is OK..even if they act illegally and don’t give a damn.. gramps Report As Abusive     May 23, 2010 11:06pm EDT Israel is above any law dontchaknow? Contracted to make ’safe’ banking software for Canadian banks, they went ahead and built themselves a handy backdoor to spy on Canadian Banks anytime they felt like it. And fake Canadian passports? They did that for a hit like two years ago. SummerSlasher Report As Abusive     May 23, 2010 11:09pm EDT Israel should remember it is a state, and states have some rules. Now that Israel is exposed, it means other states whose passports were misused will call them out on this. Doesnt matter if individuals think this is great…. those affected natiions will not think so, and will take some (hopefuly) nominal actions. Best if Israel accepts these actions quietly and not make it a diplomatic issue sebek Report As Abusive     May 23, 2010 11:18pm EDT Israel plays to different rules to the rest of the world. Because they were persecuted 70 years ago they can now commit crimes with impunity. Sinbad1 Report As Abusive     May 23, 2010 11:27pm EDT I don’t know if Israel is guilty or not but, historic evidence, such as Entebbe and the Surprise bombing of an Iraq nuclear reactor seems to suggest that the Israeli goverment is not above risking International censure when it feels it must do something patently illegal or immoral in normal circumstances, to accomplish it’s goals. In both above cases, they lucked out in that the international community ended up deciding in their favor. If the Israelis are guilty of using forged passports of citizens of allied or friendly nations, they may have been banking on another mild censure and eventual acceptance. That they are now facing a more serious diplomatic “fallout” is probably surprising but still endurable for them. After all, in their book, the State of Israel comes before any other concern. Friendships can be sacrificed as long as Israel endures. Ironically, nowadays, Israel finds itself adopting many “superiority” viewpoints similar to the Nazi regime which persecuted and murdered Jews. By foisting an “Us versus Them” policy on their people, the State easily regulates the mindset of all Israelis, even encouraging their people to be against less hardlined citizens of Israel; Jew, Arab, or Gentile. tonygrafx Report As Abusive     May 23, 2010 11:41pm EDT If we followed the Israeli lead we would not be facing the terrorist threat we now face. The Israeli’s are the most effective at fighting terrorism. War is not pretty and FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!!! I want our Government to use whatever means necessary to fight them and I don’t need nor am I entitled to a play by play in the media. Leave our soldiers to do their jobs, Lord knows we don’t want to do it! Otter1556 Report As Abusive     May 23, 2010 11:43pm EDT ooh yeah, Israel can do whatever they feel appropriate. There is no ethic bearer here, forge the passport, bomb the country, manipulate the facts, lie to the world, use excessive power and on and on. They are the chosen one, rest of the world is fool and lesser important than chosen Israelis, most of them are victims of some crime done by Nazi. Rest of the world have to respect them and tolerate their actions. Keep it up Israelis. By the way I appreciate Ausies response to this issue. EbeeJohn Report As Abusive     May 23, 2010 11:47pm EDT What if it had been Mohammed Atta that had been hit in August of 2001? This of what might not have happened then… This guy was a BAD GUY who has MURDERED countless civilians, and traveled and was given sanctuary in the Arab world, just like countless otheres like him!! If there was true “justice” and less overt hatred of the Jews, he could have been captured and tried instead of being lauded as a hero in that culture. Lose your righteous indignation, and get real… tmonp123 Report As Abusive       See All Comments (26)       Add a Comment *We welcome comments that advance the story directly or with relevant tangential information.
