Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - Military personnel and their families will have free access to more than 600 museums nationwide beginning next week in a new program from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Under the initiative, active-duty members of the military and five immediate family members can visit museums from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The program includes active duty reserve and active duty National Guard.
"America's museums are proud to join the rest of the country in thanking our military personnel and their families for their service and sacrifice," NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman said in a statement. "I cannot imagine a better way to do that than welcoming them in to explore and enjoy the extraordinary cultural heritage our museums present."
The program is a partnership with a non-profit, Blue Star Families, that helps military families cope with their unique challenges. The collaboration with the NEA is part of the group's efforts to address a finding from a 2009 survey that 94 percent of military families feel misunderstood or unappreciated by the larger community in which they belong.
Museums participating in the program include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Children's Museum, the Children's Maritime Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the California Surf Museum and the Key West Art and Historical Society. A complete list is at arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.
Previous projects of the NEA to reach out to military families include an anthology of stories from military personnel to their families in "Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience," and opera performances at Tyndall Air Force Base under the Great American Voices Base Tour.
