Des Moines, IA (AHN) - A high school football coach has been killed in Iowa after a gunman burst into the school's weight room and began firing. Aplington-Parkersburg High School athletics director Ed Thomas was shot several times in the head.
Thomas, who coached the school's football team and taught social studies, was airlifted to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo but staff were unable to revive him at the emergency room. Thomas, 58, was training students over the summer for the upcoming football season. Thomas was a coach and a mentor to many student athletes, several of which made it into the NFL. In 2005, Thomas was the NFL's 'High School Coach of the Year'.
According to officials, an adult suspect was responsible for the shooting and is in custody. "We're trying to do everything we can but our thoughts are with Ed and his family," local superintendent Jon Thompson told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.
"Like all tragedies, the taking of Coach Thomas' life is senseless," Iowa High School Athletic Association Executive Director Richard Wulkow said. "At this time our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the Aplington-Parkersburg community and the thousands of lives he so positively impacted. He embodied the essence of what a coach should be, and that legacy will endure."
Aplington-Parkersburg High School serves two small towns in Butler County, each with populations under 2,000 people. The school was destroyed by a tornado and is currently in the process of being rebuilt.
