Nominees told to prep two speeches for Oscar night
LOS ANGELES - Academy Award organizers have come up with a novel idea for avoiding those boring Oscar acceptance speeches filled with "thank yous." Their solution: have the winners give two speeches. Contenders for the world's top film honors including George Clooney, Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges gathered on Monday for the annual Oscar nominees luncheon in Beverly Hills, and as is tradition, the show's producers offered tips on giving the 45-second acceptance speeches.
"24" halts production
LOS ANGELES - The Fox drama series '24' has shut down production so that star Kiefer Sutherland can undergo surgery for a ruptured cyst. The rupture happened earlier last week, but production continued through Friday with scenes that did not involve Sutherland, who also serves as an executive producer on the real-time drama.
Peter Gabriel discards drums, guitar for new album
NEW YORK - British rock singer and songwriter Peter Gabriel has taken what he calls the "scary" step of paring down a new album of cover songs confined to orchestral instruments and his voice. Called "Scratch my Back," the album is being released in the United Kingdom on February 15 and the United States on March 2. It is Gabriel's first solo album in eight years and features 12 covers of artists ranging from experienced to emerging, including Radiohead, Talking Heads and Regina Spektor.
NBC scores with Olympics opening weekend
LOS ANGELES - Continuing a recent streak of improved ratings for live events, the opening weekend of NBC's Winter Games coverage has posted near-record levels of viewership. Through the first three days of coverage from Vancouver, the network has averaged 28.6 million viewers per day -- 25 percent higher than the lackluster returns from the 2006 Torino Games.
"Valentine's Day" like candy at movie box offices
LOS ANGELES - Comedy "Valentine's Day' was like a box of chocolates to movie fans over the weekend, landing atop North American box office charts and helping treat major U.S. movie studios to record holiday ticket sales. The romantic comedy with Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Taylor Lautner, Bradley Cooper and Jessica Alba among an ensemble of top stars, stirred moviegoers to spend $66.9 million over the four days ending on Monday's President's Day holiday in the United States, according to studio estimates.
Kevin Smith fuels row over "fat" plane passengers
LOS ANGELES - Film director Kevin Smith has reignited a heated debate about airlines' treatment of overweight passengers after being thrown off a flight for being too large to fit in one seat. An angry tirade posted on his Twitter page about the way he was treated by Southwest Airlines last weekend has fueled a wave of protests from some angry passengers while other travelers have stood by the airline's decision.
Carly Simon seeking videos for "You're So Vain"
LOS ANGELES - Carly Simon is giving fans and filmmakers an opportunity to have some fun with one of the biggest mysteries in pop music: Who is the narcissistic target of her 1972 chart-topping tune "You're So Vain"? The pop singer/songwriter has launched a competition seeking the first official video to accompany the song -- either the original or the acoustic version released last year. Perhaps one of its widely rumored objects, Warren Beatty, will put his Oscar-winning talents to work.
Twilight star Stewart plays pole-dancing prostitute
BERLIN - U.S. actress Kristen Stewart, best known as Bella in the hit "Twilight" franchise, ditches her image as a wholesome, reserved teenager to play a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking prostitute in "Welcome to the Rileys." The movie, which is at the Berlin film festival without its two biggest stars -- Stewart and "The Sopranos" lead James Gandolfini -- has found a distributor for the key U.S. market and will hit cinemas in the autumn.
Roman Polanski in pole position at Berlin film festival
BERLIN - Roman Polanski can enjoy a break from sensational headlines about his arrest and misdemeanors and bask in the glow of mostly positive reviews for his latest movie "The Ghost Writer." The 76-year-old director, under house arrest in his chalet in Gstaad, is among the early frontrunners for prizes at the Berlin film festival this year, although the 10-day competition has yet to reach halfway.
Secretive urban artist Banksy shows film in Berlin
BERLIN - Banksy, the secretive British artist whose work has appeared on city streets around the world, said on Sunday he hoped his documentary film "Exit Through The Gift Shop" will raise the standing of urban art. But the anonymous graffiti artist with a cult following said in a shadowy video message to audiences at the Berlin Film Festival on Sunday before the screening of his film that it was possible it could have the complete opposite effect.
