ShareThis February 15, 2010 5:06 p.m. EST Topics: science and technology, company information, consumers, technology, economy, business and finance, electronic commerce, consumer goods, United States Mitchell Jaworski - AHN Reporter Santa Clara, California, United States (AHN) - Intel Corp and Nokia announced Monday that they will merge their Linux-based Moblin and Maemo software platforms, creating MeeGo, which aims to work across a wide range of devices such as smartphones and netbooks. The merger is designed to get Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, and Intel in the mobile operating system market. The field is already crowded with Apple's iPhone platform, Google's Android and Palm's WebOS. MeeGo is set for release in the second quarter, according to the two firms. The platform will feature Qt, a program that allows developers to write an application for a range of devices, as opposed to just a single device type. "Our vision for seamlessly communicating between computing devices from the home, auto, office or your pocket is taking a big step forward today with the introduction of MeeGo," said Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini. "MeeGo will drive an even wider range of Internet computing and communication experiences for consumers, on new types of mobile devices," said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO, Nokia. The companies also stated that applications on the separate Moblin and Maemo platforms will function on MeeGo. Applications and content for all Nokia devices on the MeeGo platform will be available at the Ovi Store, according to the release.
