Microsoft launches mobile software overhaul
BARCELONA - Microsoft <MSFT.O> launched its new mobile phone operating software on Monday, introducing a range of music, gaming and networking features aimed at expanding its appeal beyond its core business customers. The world's biggest software company, which is trying to wrest back market share from Apple's <AAPL.O> iPhone and Research in Motion's <RIM.TO> BlackBerry, said new phones featuring Windows Phone 7 would be in stores by Christmas.
Nokia, Intel team up in phone software race
BARCELONA - Nokia <NOK1V.HE> and Intel <INTC.O> said they are teaming up in top-end smartphone software and Microsoft <MSFT.O> finally unveiled its new phone operating system, Windows Phone 7, as they race to keep up with Apple <AAPL.O> and Google <GOOG.O>. Nokia, the world's biggest maker of mobile handsets, said on Monday it would merge its Linux Maemo software platform, used in its flagship N900 phone, with Intel's Moblin, which is also based on Linux open-sourced software, to create a new platform, MeeGo.
Google calls Apple valuable partner, sees no change
BARCELONA - Google <GOOG.O> sees Apple <AAPL.O> as a valuable partner and sees no reason for that to change, a senior executive said amid rumors that Microsoft's <MSFT.O> Bing search engine may replace Google on the iPhone. "Apple is a very close and valuable partner and we're very excited about the relationship we have with them today. We have no reason to believe that's going to change," Vic Gundotra, who leads Google's mobile engineering, told journalists on Monday.
Nokia says free satnav to lift services sales
BARCELONA - Nokia's services unit chief Niklas Savander said he is more confident than before on the unit's 2011 revenue target due to a strong take-up by phone buyers of the company's free satellite navigation offering. The world's largest cellphone maker Nokia <NOK1V.HE> last month followed Google <GOOG.O> in starting to offer free satellite navigation on its cellphones -- raising worries about how the services unit can reach its 2 billion euro sales target for 2011.
Operators unite to challenge Apple's apps
BARCELONA - Twenty-four telecom operators have formed an alliance to build an open platform that will deliver applications to all mobile phone users in an effort to compete with Apple's <AAPL.O> successful apps store. The move is supported by three of the world's largest device makers -- LG Electronics <066570.KS>, Samsung <005930.KS> and Sony Ericsson <6758.T> <ERICb.ST>, the telecoms industry body GSM Association said on Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Samsung, Sony Ericsson roll out new smartphones
BARCELONA - Samsung Electronics <005930.KS> and Sony Ericsson <6758.T><ERICb.ST> unveiled their new top smartphone models on Sunday, both hoping to improve their positions in the more lucrative part of the phone market. Samsung, the world No 2 handset maker, unveiled its flagship smartphone model Wave -- using a new touch screen technology and the first phone to use its bada operating system.
Adobe pushes mobile video despite Apple stand-off
BARCELONA - Adobe <ADBE.O> announced advances to its popular Flash video player that promise to improve the experience of watching video on a mobile, and said it would support Google's <GOOG.O> Android phone platform. Adobe, whose Flash software delivers most video viewed online and made YouTube possible, also said it believed Apple <AAPL.O> would eventually bow to market pressure and include Flash on the iPhone and the new iPad tablet computer.
Linux group LiMo growing, Adobe joins
BARCELONA - U.S. software firm Adobe and three other firms joined the wireless Linux group LiMo on Monday, underlying the growing role of the Linux computer operating system in cellphones. The market for software platforms on cellphones is led by Nokia's Symbian operating system, but it has lost much ground over the last year to Apple Inc and Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry.
