Chinese schools deny link to Google attack
SHANGHAI - A prestigious Chinese university and a lesser-known vocational school have denied a report they were the source of recent cyber attacks on Internet giant Google <GOOG.O> and other U.S. corporations, Xinhua news agency said on Saturday. A representative of Shanghai Jiaotong University, considered one of China's best, said the allegations in a New York Times report were baseless and even if the school's computers appeared to be involved, it did not mean the hackers were based there.
Microsoft, Amazon sign patent deal
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> said on Monday it signed a patent agreement with Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> that allows the two companies to share technology in several areas including Amazon's Kindle electronic book reader and Amazon's use of Linux-based servers. The companies did not disclose details, but Microsoft said Amazon would pay it an undisclosed amount under the patent license agreement.
U.S. pinpoints code writer behind Google attack: report
BEIJING - U.S. government analysts believe a Chinese man with government links wrote the key part of a spyware programme used in hacker attacks on Google last year, the Financial Times reported on Monday. The man, a security consultant in his 30s, posted sections of the programme to a hacking forum where he described it as something he was "working on," the paper said, quoting an unidentified researcher working for the U.S. government.
How to decline Facebook friends without offence
NEW YORK - A colleague I just met at work has invited me to be their friend on Facebook. I don't want to offend them, but nor do I want to share my candid photos and lousy Scrabble scores with someone I hardly know. Can I ignore their invite?
Wal-Mart agrees to buy movie service Vudu: report
LOS ANGELES - Wal-Mart Stores Inc <WMT.N> will buy the Vudu movie service in a deal that puts the world's largest retailer in competition for online delivery of films with the likes of Netflix Inc <NFLX.O>, the New York Times reported on Monday. The Santa Clara, California-based startup has thousands of movies from all the Hollywood studios, which it delivers to consumers via the Internet, according to its website. Its investors include Greylock Partners, Benchmark Capital, Artis Capital and other institutional firms.
Microsoft phone system hits reset on digital music
DENVER - It's been more than six years since then-Microsoft CEO Bill Gates admitted that Apple caught the company "flat-footed" in the digital music market and directed his team to make up for lost ground, according to recently surfaced internal e-mails. To date, Microsoft's effort to address the digital music market has largely focused on its Zune player and Zune Pass subscription service, which have won favorable reviews but few customers. But with the recent unveiling of its Windows Phone 7 Series operating system at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona, Microsoft hopes to reboot its struggling digital music strategy.
The Internet will make you smarter, say experts
LOS ANGELES - An online survey of 895 Web users and experts found more than three-quarters believe the Internet will make people smarter in the next 10 years, according to results released on Friday. Most of the respondents also said the Internet would improve reading and writing by 2020, according to the study, conducted by the Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University in North Carolina and the Pew Internet and American Life project.
U.S. agency says Google can be power marketer
WASHINGTON on Thursday approved Google's request to purchase electricity and resell it to wholesale customers.
Computer jargon baffles users, hinders security
BRUSSELS - Computer jargon, a "tick box" culture and unimaginative advertising are discouraging Internet users from learning how to protect themselves online. Faced with such gobbledegook, many of the world's nearly 2 billion Internet users conclude that security is for "experts" and fail to take responsibility for the security of their own patch of cyberspace -- a potentially costly mistake.
Microsoft steps up search assault on Google
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp's <MSFT.O> assault on search engine leader Google Inc <GOOG.O> took a major step forward on Thursday as U.S. and European regulators cleared the software company's search partnership with Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O>. The 10-year deal, struck last July, is the biggest effort yet by Microsoft to establish an online business to rival Google, an area where Microsoft has lost $5 billion over the last four years.
