Even Oscar-winners 'insecure' and 'anxious', says Cotillard

PARIS (AFP) - – Oscar-winning Marion Cotillard is on a winning streak in Hollywood, one of few French stars to make it in tinseltown, but still talks of "insecurity" and "anxiety" on the job.
"The public talks about stars," she told AFP in an interview. "But when you're working you're simply someone who's working, working with passion and sometimes with anxiety."
A national pride since scooping an Oscar as tragic Edith Piaf in bio-pic "La Vie En Rose", the 34-year-old star is making headlines at home this week ahead of the release in France of "Nine".
The star-studded musical about an Italian film director -- played by Daniel Day-Lewis and inspired by Federico Fellini -- includes not only Cotillard but Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson and Sophia Loren.
Cotillard followed in Loren's footsteps in 2008 when she became only the second woman to win the best actress Oscar for a non-English speaking performance.
Quiet and softly spoken, pausing to reflect before replying to questions, Cotillard says the two months learning the song and dance routines and shooting "Nine" were good times, overall.
"Having to sing and dance, which isn't customary, created a very strong bond because we shared the same anxiety and the same enthusiasm," she said.
"They're all wonderful people, simple women, easy to connect to, and with a lot of love for women," she added of her co-stars. "There was a real sense of supporting each other, and very quickly there was a feeling we were all one big family."
The plot of the movie, about a director in a personal tailspin suffering from a creative block, was all too familiar territory, she said.
"I know from experience that when you're working you can be very egocentric. When I'm working on a character I'm in a bubble," she said. "When I was on the Piaf movie, I think it was difficult for the people who were around me at the time."
Brought up in a theatrical family -- her father is a director, actor and former mime, her mother an actress and drama teacher -- Cotillard picked up a string of awards in France before breaking onto the international scene in 2003 with a role in Tim Burton's "Big Fish".
Since the Piaf movie, she has starred in "Public Enemies" with Johnny Depp, "Nine" -- where she plays Day-Lewis' wife -- and is next scheduled for a role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in a new film by Christopher Nolan, who made the last two Batman movies, titled "Inception".
Asked why very few actors or actresses had left France for a movie career in the United States, Cotillard said, "I believe this is because we're one of the rare European countries to have a hugely rich and diverse film industry."
Film legends such as Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn and Greta Garbo remained in Hollywood because the industry was rich and diversified, she said.
"But take even Penelope (Cruz), Spanish cinema is rich but very different to French cinema, where there is a breadth that is quite unique," said the actress who shares her life with French actor and director Guillaume Canet.
"I think France is one of the rare countries in Europe where you can work satisfactorily in film."
Eating pasta between interviews, and "happy" to be home for a spell, Cotillard said she planned to continue working in both countries.
"It's all a question of borders!" she said. "I have no borders and frankly, Asian films are extraordinary and if I learnt to speak Chinese or Japanese then perhaps one day I could play the role of an old French woman in China or Japan."
