Rochette leads Skate Canada women on home ice

OTTAWA (AFP) - - Canadian champion Joannie Rochette grabbed the women's lead after the short Skate Canada programme, while 2008 world runner-up Carolina Kostner of Italy finished a disappointing seventh.
Rochette seized the lead with 64.74 points with Japan's Fumie Suguri second on 57.92 and American Caroline Zhang, the 2007 world junior champion, third on 53.28 with Britain's Jenna McCorkell fourth on 51.64.
American Beatrisa Liang was fifth on 49.92 with compatriot Alissa Czisny sixth on 49.66 and Kostner seventh on 48.56.
Russia's Yuko Kawaguchi and Alexander Smirnov, third at last year's European championships, led after the pairs short programme with 65.02 points to 60.66 for American 2007 world champions Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker.
Canada's Jessica Dube and Bryce Davison were third in the short programme with 60.14 points.
France's Yannick Ponsero led the men's competition after the short programme with 78.05 points followed by Canada's Patrick Chan on 77.47 and American Ryan Bradley on 72.50.
Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White led the ice dance after the compulsory dance with 34.29 points followed by Skate America runners-up Nathalie Pechalat-Fabian Bourzat of France with 33.90.
Three titles will be awarded Saturday and the ice dance crown will be decided on Sunday.
