Paris Hilton questioned by police after Cup match
PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa - Hollywood socialite Paris Hilton was arrested after a World Cup match in South Africa Friday on suspicion of marijuana possession but subsequently released without charge. The 29-year old great-granddaughter of Hilton hotels founder Conrad Hilton and her friend Jennifer Rovero were taken into custody after the Brazil-Netherlands World Cup quarter-final game in the South African coastal city.
Lady Gaga heads for 10 million Facebook fan record
LOS ANGELES - Glam pop singer Lady Gaga is on the brink of becoming the first living person to have 10 million fans on a single social networking site, having already overtaken U.S. President Barack Obama on Facebook, a British group that measures online popularity said on Friday. Famecount.com said Lady Gaga is already the most popular living musician online, according to her following on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
Protests, police at Japan opening of "The Cove"
TOKYO - Shouts, a scuffle and flag-waving protesters greeted the Japanese opening of "The Cove," a controversial Oscar-winning documentary about a grisly annual dolphin hunt. The movie, which shows dolphins being herded into a cove and then slaughtered, has met with fierce opposition in Japan from groups who say it is "anti-Japanese" and an affront to traditional culture.

Judge drops charges in Calif. paparazzo attack
LOS ANGELES - A California judge on Friday dismissed battery charges against two men accused of attacking a celebrity photographer who was taking pictures of actor Matthew McConaughey while he was surfing in Malibu. Superior Judge Lawrence J. Mira, whose court resides in the seaside enclave just north of Los Angeles, dismissed the charges against the two men at the request of prosecutors after jurors deadlocked.

LOS ANGELES - Oscar-winning director and actor Mel Gibson, who caused a media storm four years ago over an anti-Semitic statement, is again making headlines for using an apparent racial slur in an argument with his ex-girlfriend. Celebrity news website Radaronline.com Thursday published excerpts of an audiotape of Gibson telling Oksana Grigorieva, whom "The Passion of the Christ" director is battling in court, that they way she is dressed made her look like a "pig in heat."

Writer Beryl Bainbridge dies aged 75
LONDON - British Novelist Dame Beryl Bainbridge died at the age of 75 on Friday after battling cancer, her literary agent said. Liverpool-born Bainbridge, nominated for the Man Booker prize on five occasions and two-time winner of the Whitbread award for fiction, died at a London hospital in the early hours.
