The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in a statement on its website that the decision was taken before its scheduled July 27 meeting "to contain inflation and anchor inflationary expectations going forward". Governor D. Subbarao said the repo -- the lending rate to commercial banks -- has risen to to 5.50 percent with immediate effect while the reverse repo -- the rate the central bank pays to banks for deposits -- is now 4.0 percent. The increase, the third this year, had been expected by many economists, as India grapples with rising food prices, which have been spreading to other parts of the economy. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters on a visit to Mumbai earlier this week that he expected inflationary pressures to ease in the coming months. But he said the central bank would consider "all aspects" in determining monetary policy. The government in New Delhi has been under fire from opposition parties for deregulating petrol prices, leading to fears of a rise in the cost of living. India's annual inflation surged into double figures to 10.16 percent in May, led by rising food costs and rising industrial growth. Deregulating petrol prices is part of efforts by the left-leaning Congress-led government to reduce a gaping budget deficit by reducing the massive subsidies it pays to state-run fuel companies. Subbarao said in his statement Friday: "The developments on the inflation front raise several concerns... Food price inflation and consumer price inflation remain at elevated levels." Economist D.H. Pai Panandiker, who heads the independent RPG Goenka Foundation in New Delhi, a private economic think-tank, said he did not believe the hikes would do much to curb inflation. India's inflation is "almost all driven by food inflation which interest rates really can't touch", Panandiker told AFP.
