Defeat ruins carnival for Israel's Brazilian Kibbutz
BROR HAYIL, Israel (AFP) - – For members of Bror Hayil, Israel's Brazilian kibbutz, the World Cup was meant to bring respite from the often harsh reality of the Middle East.
But the carnival atmosphere cultivated on this collective farm founded by Jewish Brazilian immigrants quickly vanished Friday as Holland sent their team crashing out of the tournament.
But it wasn't supposed to be like that for the small kibbutz that lies just four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the volatile Gaza Strip
The World Cup was a chance for residents to celebrate their Brazilian heritage, with sounds of samba music replacing the frequent sirens that warn of rocket attacks.
"When we can, we raise the Brazilian flag, we are optimistic. That's how we are," said Natan Glakowicz, 58, whose daughter, Dana, was killed in 2005 by a mortar shell fired from the neighbouring Hamas-run Palestinian enclave.
He opened a Brazilian restaurant on the Kibbutz, which he said serves as a working memorial to his daughter, the joys of Brazilian culture helping to ease the pain.
"As a father I decided to do this. It makes me happy to see people come here and experience a taste of Brazil, the music, the food, the dancing," said Glakowicz, who emigrated from Sao Paolo in 1980.
And for Brazilians nothing provides solace like football when the team is playing well.
"Now let's talk about the football," he said before hurrying off to the game where he was to play in the local Samba band.
For others the tournament provides respite from everyday worries.
"We live from World Cup to World Cup," said Avigail Zimmerman, whose parents were among the core group of Brazilians who founded Bror Hayil in the midst of the 1948 Middle East war following the establishment of the Jewish state.
Today about 100 of the kibbutz's 500 members are from Brazil, but they form the soul of the community. Brazilian flags fly from everything from the golf carts used by the elderly to get around to the tractors ploughing the nearby fields.
"Everyone comes to visit us, they know this kibbutz is where you find Brazil in Israel," she said.
"Just like in Brazil, we have no money, we are poor, but when there is football every one is happy," she said, joining some 500 people to watch the game on a giant screen set up at the kibbutz swimming pool.
Dozens of green, yellow and blue flags fluttered in the breeze, heavy with smoke from the large chunks of roasting meat rotating over a fire.
Almost everyone was dressed in bright yellow Brazil football shirts as Glakowicz and his samba band competed with the vuvuzelas coming over the loudspeakers.
The carnival atmosphere grew as Robinho put the five-time champions ahead in the tenth minute, festivities continuing until half time when the crowd danced and swayed to traditional Brazilian songs.
And then it changed.
Dismay over a Dutch equalizer turned to shock after a second goal. And when Brazil were reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute, it even silenced the drummers in the band.
"It's terrible, just terrible," said Rom Levavi, 42, another Kibbutz resident originally from Brazil. "There is going to be a lot of sadness here. All we can hope for now is that Argentina don't win," he said referring to their South American arch-rivals.
The surprise loss left most speechless.
"There is going to be lots of meat, lots to drink. It does not matter whether we win or lose, we will have a party," Glakowicz had predicted before the game.
He was wrong, when the final whistle went, everyone just went home.
